PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

The object of this work is to provide a Lesson Book suitable for boys who have been taught the Public School Latin Primer, and have had some, but not much, experience in translating Latin into English. In the hope that they may be encouraged to take an intelligent interest in their work, the separate lessons have been made complete in themselves. To avoid the necessity of using a number of books at once, information usually sought in Dictionaries of Biography, Geography, and Antiquities, has been supplied in the Notes.

The author's best thanks are due to his Colleague, the Rev. E. D. STONE, for much kind advice and help in the selection of the Extracts.

ETON, Jan. 1878.

PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION.

The only important alterations in the text are on pp. 51 and 52. A free paraphrase of each piece has been given. Some additions have been made to the Notes, many of them very kindly suggested by the Rev. R. COWLEY POWLES, M.A., late Fellow of Exeter College, Oxford.
