ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS. BY THE Right Reverend Father in GOD, Late Lord Bishop of Rochefter, and Dean of Westminster. Published from the Originals By THOMAS MOORE, D. D. VOL. II. LONDON: Printed by GEORGE JAMES in Little-Britain: T HE following Sermons being A 2 their iii their Appearance in Print; and to recommend them likewife to the Reader : For his Enemies and Friends feem all to agree in this Part of his Character, That he was as Judicious, Inftructive, Convincing, Perfwafive, and Delightful a Preacher, as ever England bred. The only Excufe therefore, that I think myself obliged to make on this Occafion, is, for not Publishing more of them, than what are contained in these two Volumes; for every one will naturally conclude, that he left a great many more behind him, having been a conftant Preacher for about Twenty Tears, and an occafional one a great deal longer, The The true Reason of my not doing it then is this. He burnt a good many of them himself at Paris, and, by a Writing found among what were left, fignified, that these were the only ones fit to be Printed; fo that, without acting contrary to the Bishop's Opinion of his own Performances, of which He was certainly the best Fudge, no more could, and therefore no more ought to be Published: And it being from thence refolved, that no more should, the only effectual Way of preventing it was, to committ the reft to the Flames. Which was accordingly done, in my Prefence, by William Morice, Efq; his Dutiful and Worthy Son-in-Law, and ExTo whom I take this Opportunity of Acknowledging myself much obliged for feveral confiderable Acts of Friendship; ecutor.
