* This was a most stupendous miracle, and which hath never been paralleled in history, where a handful of men went against so numerous a nation to battle ; (for the women prisoners only which had not known man amounted to thirty-two thousand,) and yet not one of them should be killed or missing: and of this particular providence, they were fully sensible, and therefore they offered their oblation,

$ The names of these jewels are only conjectured ; so tħat there is no certainty of their being what the Engilsh translator calls thema

In this verse the children of Reuben are first mentioned, because he was the eldest; but in the succeeding verse, the children of Gadare first mentioned, because they were the piopusers of the scheme; and they were also men of greater valour than the children of Reuben; as may be observed from Deut, chap. xxxiii. verse 20. " And teareth the arm with the crown of the head." And consequently it was they that encouraged the tribe of Reuben to dwell there, although separated from the other tribes.

they were actually known to be some of those which had prostituted themselves in order to cause Israel to sin, and it was particularly known which of them had caused such or such persons to sin. See Jarchi.

• We do not find this ordinance any where in the Pentateuch; nevertheless Eleazar asserts, that the Lord had commanded it to Moses, therefore it must be true; and this shews that there are moro ordinances than what Moses wrote in the Pentateuch, which is what the Jews call the oral law.

$ This water of separation means such water as a woman that is out of her separation bathes herself in to become clean. This commandment means, that every vessel must be purified in the same manner as it bas been used. If dry, upon the fire, like gridirons, &c. it must be burned; pots and pans, that were used with liquor, must be purified in boiling water, &c.

# For as he bad sent only a thousand of a tribe, and they had gotten great spoil, the others might perhaps bave envied their good fortune; for this reason, and that there should be no illwill between them, God commanded to give them one half of both man and beast, and which may be accounted the public spoil: but as to the gold and silver, and other moveables whicin every one plundered for himself, and which may be termed private booty, there was no division made as we find. This coincides with the opinion of Jarchi, on verse 26.

made use of the expression, “If a man vow a vow upto the Lord,” foras this is a common row, it would have been sufficient to have said, -If a man yow a vow, or swear an oatbed to yowing,

&c, To which it may be answered, that this denotes an exhortation to man not to be especially not to swear by God's holy name. Hence it is observed in Medrash, that in one place

Jeremiahchap. ver. 2, we find,' “ And thou shalt swear the Lord liveth, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness." From whence the Rabbins obserye, that it is not allowable to swear by God's name, unless they have all the following good qualities, as observed in Deut. ch. I. ver. 20, “ Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by bis name.” But if not, thou art not allowed to swear by his name at all. Hence may be perceived the heineousness of being addicted to the taking of God's name in vain, as is but too frequently the case. • It is the opinion of Jarchi, that Moses made use of the expression, " Behuld these,” because
