GANYMEDE.

Le bâton pastoral et le bonnet phrygien sont des attributs qui appartiennent également à Ganymède et à Pâris; mais l'air de jeunesse de cette figure paraît plus convenable à l'échanson de Jupiter, qui, dit-on, avait été enlevé par le maître des dieux, parce que la terre n'était pas digne de posséder un corps d'une telle beauté. Visconti a trouvé un caractère de plus encore dans la forme et la disposition de la chlamyde, absolument semblable à celle que l'on voit dans un petit groupe du Vatican, et que ce célèbre antiquaire regarde comme une copie du célèbre Ganymède en bronze de Léocades.

La pose de cette figure est gracieuse, le mouvement est agréable, la tête est bien coiffée et d'un beau caractère, la draperie est jetée avec élégance, mais l'exécution manque de finesse, et il est à croire que cette statue est une copie médiocre de quelbon ouvrage de l'antiquité.

GANYMEDES.

The shepherd's crook and the phrygian cap are attributes which belong both to Ganymedes and to Paris; but the youthful appearance of this figure is more suitable to Jupiter's cupbearer, who, it is said, had been carried off by the king of the gods, because the earth was not worthy of possessing a body of such beauty. Visconti has discovered, in the form and arrangement of the chlamys, another characteristic, absolutely similar to the one seen in a small group in the Vatican, and which this celebrated antiquarian considers a copy of the famous bronze Ganymedes by Leocades.

The attitude of the figure is graceful, the action pleasing, the head well arranged and of a fine character, and the drapery is thrown with elegance; but, the execution fails in delicacy; it is therefore presumable that this statue is an indifferent copy of some good original antique.
