THE following sketches, deserving in many instances only the name of anecdotes, may serve to give a general idea of Italian history to young people, and, it is hoped, may excite a desire to refer to the works from which they have been drawn ; as, with every endeavour to compress into the prescribed limits as much information as possible, many interesting facts have necessarily been omitted.
