him, and keep his Commandments. The reward of righteousness, the inexhaustible favour of the Almighty, shall be kept in store, not only for the third and fourth generation, but shall be imputed in augmentation of present peace and future bliss, unto children's children; indefinitely to those who prove their love towards the God of their fathers by the observance of his commands: it will be denied only to those who follow not in the paths of holiness and virtue, and wilfully forfeit their best inheritance, the blessing of their God.

So much more does it please God to extend mercy, in accepting, through the mediation and for the sake of his beloved Son, the good works of the faithful and obedient, however imperfect and little meritorious in themselves-than to execute the sentence of his justice, however long incurred and flagrantly de. served, that he places no restriction on his benevolence in adding to the number of those on whom he will bestow reward in remembrance of parental fidelity and adherence to his service, whilst he confines the marks of his jealousy and anger to those who live within the possible age of the first transgressor, or at furthest within the limit of contagion propagated by his example.

From Scripture.

SECTION 1.

Deut. viii. 19. And it shall be, if thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I testify against you this day, that ye shall surely perish. Josh. xxiv. 16-18. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods; For the Lord our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers, out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: And the Lord drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the Lord; for he is our God. Heb. xii. 28, 29. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: For our God is a consuming fire. Rom. i. 9. For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers. 1 Thess. i. 9. For they themselves shew of us what manner of entering in we had unto you, and how ye turned to God from idols, to serve the living and true God.

SECTION II.

(See Exod. xx. 4, 5.) Deut. v. 8, 9. Thou shalt not make thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing

that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the waters beneath the earth: thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments. Psal. xcv. 6. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our Maker. 1 Chron. xvi. 29. Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. John iv. 20—24. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship; for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. Matt. xxviii. 20. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. Jam. i. 27. Pure religion, and undefiled before God and the Father, is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. Ísai. xxiv. 5. The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof, because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinances, broken the everlasting covenant. 1 Pet. ii. 13. Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme. 1 Cor. vi. 20. For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Isai. Ixiv. 8. But now, O Lord, thou art our Father: we are the clay, and thou our Potter; and we all

are the work of thy hand. Psal. xxxiv. 22. The Lord redeemeth the soul of his servants; and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate. Luke i. 68. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people. Phil. iv. 6. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God. Ephes. v. 20. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Heb. ii. 12. Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all long-suffering and doctrine. Jam. i. 21, 22. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. Matt. xxviii. 19. Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 1 Cor. xi. 23–25. 29. For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was betrayed, took bread: And when he had given thanks, he brake it and said, Take eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of

me. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. 1 Tim. v. 17. Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. Levit. xix. 30. Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary; I am the Lord. Matt. xviii. 15—17. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as un heathen man and a publican. Joel ii. 12, 13. Therefore also now, saith the Lord, Turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning; And rend your hearts and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
