And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

CHAP. XXII.-VER. 1. Ήγγιζε δὲ ἡ ἑορτὴ τῶν ἀζύμων, ἡ λεγο μένη Πάσχα.

a Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. [Ye know that after two days is the feast of the Passover, Matt. xxvi. 2. After two days was the feast of the Passover, and of unleavened bread, Mark xiv. 1.]

VER. 2.

Καὶ ἐζήτουν οἱ ̓Αρχιερεῖς, καὶ οἱ Γραμ ματεῖς τὸ, πῶς ἀνέλωσιν αὐτον· ἐφοβοῦντο γὰρ τὸν λαόν.

And the Chief Priests and Scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

[Then assembled together the Chief

elders of the people, unto the palace, of the High Priest, who was called Caiaphas. And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. But they said, Not on the feastday, lest there be an uproar among the people, Matt xxvi. 3-5. And the Chief Priests and the Scribes sought how they might take him by craft, and put him to death. But they said, Not on the feast-day, lest there be an uproar of the people, Mark xiv. 1, 2.]

[And saith unto them, Go ye into man bearing a pitcher of water : follow the city, and there shall meet you a him, Mark xiv. 13.]

VER. 11.

Καὶ ἐρεῖτε τῷ οἰκοδεσπότῃ τῆς οἰκίας· λέγει σοι ὁ διδάσκαλος· Ποῦ ἐστι τὸ κατάλυμα, ὅπου τὸ πάσχα μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν μου φάγω ;

And ye shall say unto the good-man of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall eat the Passover with my disciples?

[And he said, Go into the city to such a man, and say unto him, The Master saith, My time is at hand, I will keep the Passover at thy house

VER. 13. ̓Απελθόντες δὲ εὗρον καθὼς εἴρηκεν αὐτ τοῖς· καὶ ἡτοίμασαν τὸ πάσχα.

[And the disciples did as Jesus had appointed them; and they made ready the Passover, Matt. xxvi. 19. And his disciples went forth, and had said unto them: and they made came into the city, and found as he ready the Passover, Mark xiv. 16.]

Καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἡ ὥρα, ἀνέπεσε, καὶ οἱ ddexa áπóσTodo Cùv auT.

a And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with

a Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

VER. 21. Πλὴν ἰδοὺ, ἡ χεὶρ τοῦ παραδιδόντος για μετ ̓ ἐποῦ ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης.

But, a behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.

[And as they did eat, he said, Verily I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me, Matt. xxvi. 21. And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me, Mark xiv. 18. When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, Verily, verily, I

VER. 22.

Καὶ ὁ μὲν υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου πορεύεται κατὰ τὸ ὡρισμένον· πλὴν οὐαὶ τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ ἐκείνῳ δι ̓ οὗ παραδίδοται.

a And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

[The Son of man goeth, as it is written of him: but woe unto that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed it had been good for that man if he had not been born, Matt. xxvi. 24. The Son of man indeed goeth, as it is written of him: but woe to that man by whom the Son of man is betrayed! good were it for that man if he had never been born, Mark xiv. 21.]

VER. 23.

Kal auto negavto Cuntεiv πpos iavτοὺς, τὰ, τίς ἄρα εἴη ἐξ αὐτῶν ὁ τοῦτο μέλλων πράσσειν,

And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

[And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began every one of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I? Matt. xxvi. 22. And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it 1? and another said, Is it 1? Mark xiv. 19. Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? John xiii. 22-25.]

VER. 24.

Εγένετο δὲ καὶ φιλονεικία ἐν αὐτοῖς, τὸ, τίς αὐτῶν δοκεῖ εἶναι μείζων.

And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

VER. 25.

ζοντες αὐτῶν, εὐεργέται καλοῦνται.

a And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

[But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them, Matt. xx. 25. saith unto them, Ye know that they But Jesus called them to him, and which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them, Mark x. 42.]

[But it shall not be so among you : but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant, Matt. xx. 26, 27. VER. 27.

Τίς γὰρ μείζων, ὁ ἀνακείμενος, ἢ ὁ διακονῶν; οὐχὶ ὁ ἀνακείμενος ; ἐγὼ δέ εἰμι ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν ὡς ὁ διακονῶν.

For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? a but I am among you as he that serveth.

[Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, Matt. xx. 28. For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, Mark x. 45.]

Ὑμεῖς δέ ἐστε οἱ διαμεμενηκότες μετ'

Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? and he said unto him, Lord thou knowest all things thou knowest that I love thee. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour : Whom resist, stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. VER. 30.

Ἵνα ἐσθίητε καὶ πίνητε ἐπὶ τῆς τραπέζης μου, ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ μου· καὶ καθί. σησθε ἐπί θρόνων, κρίνοντες τὰς δώδεκα φυλὰς τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.

a That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

VER. 31.

Εἶπε δὲ ὁ Κύριος Σίμων, Σίμων, ἰδοὺ ὁ Σατανᾶς ἐξητήσατο ὑμᾶς, τοῦ σινιάσαι ὡς τὸν σῖτον

And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, a Satan bhath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

VER. 32.

Ἐγὼ δὲ ἐδεήθην περὶ σοῦ, ἵνα μὴ ἐκλείπη ἡ πίστις σου· καὶ σύ ποτε ἐπιστρέψας, στήριξον τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς σου.

But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not and when thou art a converted, strengthen thy brethren.

Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth, 2 Pet. i. 10-12. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot and blameless, iii. 14. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away by the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory, both now and for ever. Amen, 17, 18.

VER. 33.

Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Κύριε, μετὰ σοῦ ἕτοιμός εἰμι καὶ εἰς φυλακὴν καὶ εἰς θάνατον πορεύεσθαι.

a And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
