A Mount'-ain is a high hill.

SNOW-DON in Wales is a mountain, and so is BEN NE'-Vis in Scotland. The highest mountain in the world is above five miles high. All very high mountains have their tops covered with snow, both summer and winter.

A Plain is a large and near-ly lev-el part of the land.

When a plain is at a great height from the sea we call it a PLAT-EAU (plat-ō). There is no plateau in England, but there are several plains. Or write 25 spellings out of any book, each word having six or more letters in it, and learn the first 10.

Lesson 43.-Wednesday Morning. Work these Sums. (1) Add 97,063; 6,873; 892; 9,784; 333; 7.

DICTATION.-LEARN TO SPELL ALL THE WORDS.-Iron is the most useful of all the met-als, though it costs the least. It is met with in ev-e-ry part of the world, and a little of it is found in our blood, and in near-ly all plants, stones, and earths. It is very sel-dom found pure, as silver and gold some-times are, but it has to be melt-ed out of the ore, in a very hot fur-nace.

(1) Three thousand, seven hundred and ninety-seven × 8. (2) Multiply 59,670 by 3 and 8.

PARTS OF THE LAND.

A Vol-ca'-no is a mountain or hill which throws out steam, flame, ashes, stones, and melted matter from its interior. Volcanoes are often called Burn'-ing Mountains.

ET-NA, in Si'-ci-ly, is a volcano. We have no burning mountains in England, but there are a great many in South America, and in other parts of the world

A Val'-ley is a hol-low between hills or mountains.

Rivers generally run through valleys, and their waters often fill up the hollows and form lakes.

There are some in all parts of England, and beautiful valleys with lakes are found among the mountains of Cum-ber-land and Wales.

Or write 25 spellings out of any book, each word having six or more letters in it, and learn the first 10.

PARTS OF THE LAND.

A Des'-ert is a tract of country gen-er-al-ly cov-er-ed with sand, in which nothing will grow.

There are two very large deserts in the world, and a great many small ones. The Desert of SA-HA-RA, in Africa, and of Go-BI, in Asia, are many times larger than all our country. There are no deserts in England. An O-a'-sis is a fertile spot in a desert.

Deserts are generally very dry, but when a spring of water rises anywhere in a desert, grass and trees begin to grow. Such a place is called an "oasis."
