awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. 5 Offer the sacrifice of righteousness: and put your trust in the Lord. 6 There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? Lord, lift thou up the light of thy countenance upon us. 7 Thou hast put gladness in my heart more than in the time that their corn and their wine increased. 8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.

PSALM V. God heareth prayer.

GIVE ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation. 2 Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray. 3 My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up. 4 For thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness: neither shall evil dwell with thee. 5 The foolish shall not stand in thy sight thou hatest all workers of iniquity. 6 Thou shalt destroy them that speak leasing: the Lord will abhor the bloody and deceitful man. 7 But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple. 8 Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness, because of mine enemies; make thy way straight before my face. 9 For there is no faithfulness in their mouth, their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre, they flatter with their tongue. 10 Destroy thou them, O God; let them fall by their own counsels: cast them out in the multitude of their transgressions, for they have rebelled against thee. 11 But let all those that put their trust in thee, rejoice: let them ever shout for joy: because thou defendest them: let them also that

PSALM. VII. Prayer against enemies.

O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver 2 Lest he tear my soul like a lion, rending it in pieces, while there is none to deliver. 3 O Lord my God, if I have done this; if there be iniquity in my hands: 4 If I have rewarded evil unto him that was at peace with me: (yea, I have delivered him that, without cause is mine enemy :) 5 Let the enemy persecute my soul, and take it, yea, let him tread down my life upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust. 6 Arise, O Lord, in thine anger, lift up thyself, because of the rage of mine enemies and awake for me to the judgment that thou hast commanded. 7 So shall the congregation of the people compass thee about : for their sakes therefore return thou on high. 8 The Lord shall judge the people judge me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to mine integrity that is in me. 9 O let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the just: for the righteous God trieth the hearts and reins. 10 My defence is of God, which saveth the upright in heart. 11 God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

PSALM XIV. Complaint against wickedness.

THE fool hath said in his heart, There is no God: they are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. 2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men; to see if there were any that did understand, and seek

God. 3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no not one. 4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord? 5 There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous. 6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor; because the Lord is his refuge. 70 that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

PSALM XV. The friend of God described.

LORD, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill ? 2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart. 3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor taketh up a reproach against his neighbour. 4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned: but he honoureth them that fear the Lord: he that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not. 5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things, shall never be moved.

PSALM XVI.

Hope of a resurrection. PRESERVE me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust. 2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, -Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee: 3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight. 4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied, that hasten after another god: their drink-offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my ips. 5 The Lord is the portion of mine inheri

tance, and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot. 6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage. 7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night-seasons. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. 10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine holy One to see corruption. 11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life in thy presence is fulness of joy, at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

PSALM XVIII. Praise to God.

I WILL love thee, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer my God, my strength, in whom I will trust, my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. 3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. 4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his cars. 7 Then the earth shook and trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken. 9 He bowed the heavens also and came down and darkness was under his feet. 10 And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his secret place: his pavilion round about him were dark waters, and thick clouds of the skies. 12 At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail-stones, and coals of fire. 13 The Lord also

thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail-stones, and coals of fire. 14 Yea,

he sent out his arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and discomfited them. 15 Then the channels of waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered: at thy rebuke, O Lord. 16 He sent from above, he took me, he drew me out of many waters. 17 He delivered me from my strong enemy, and from them which hated me for they were too strong for me. 18 They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the Lord was my stay. 19 He brought me forth also into a large place: he delivered me, because he delighted in me. 20 The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me. 21 For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God. 22 For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me. 23 I was also upright before him: and I kept myself from mine iniquity. 24 Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eye-sight. 25 With the merci. ful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself upright. 26 With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure, and with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward.

27 For thou wilt save the afflicted people: but wilt bring down high looks. 28 For thou wilt light my candle: the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. 30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the Lord is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. 31 For who is God save the Lord? or who is a rock save our God? 32 It is God that girdeth me with strength, and
