Agabus foretelleth Paul's bonds. Chap. xxi. 1 Paul will not be diffuaded from going AND it came to pafs, that after we were gotten from them, and had launched, we came with a ftraight courfe unto Coos, and the day following unto Rhodes, and trom thence unto Patara; Paul goeth to Jerufalem. 861 17 And when we were come to Jerufalem, the brethren received us gladly. 18 And the day following, Paul went in with us unto James; and all the elders were prefent. 19 And when he had faluted them, he declared particularly what things God had wrought among the Gentiles by his miniftry. 2 And finding a fhip failing over unto 20 And when they heard it, they glori Phenicia, we went aboard, and fet forth. fied the Lord, and faid unto him, Thou 3 Now when we had difcovered Cy-feeft, brother, how many thousands of prus, we left it on the left hand, and Jews there are which believe; and they failed into Syria, and landed at Tyre: for are all zealous of the law: there the ship was to unlade her burden. 4 And finding difciples, we tarried there feven days; who faid to Paul, through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerufalem. 5 And when we had accomplished thofe days, we departed and went our way; and they all brought us on our way, with wives and children, till we were out of the city; and we kneeled down on the shore, and prayed. 6 And when we had taken our leave one of another, we took ship: and they returned home again. 7 And when we had finished our courfe from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and faluted the brethren, and abode with them one day. 8 And the next day we that were of Paul's company departed, and came unto Cefarea and we entered into the houfe of Philip the evangelift, which was one of the feven; and abode with him. 9 And the fame man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. 10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus." 11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and faid, Thus faith the Holy Ghoft, So fhall the Jews at Jerufalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver bim into the hands of the Gentiles. 12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place befought him not to go up to Jerufalem. 18 Then Paul anfwered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? For I am ready, not to be bound only, but alfo to die at Jerufalem for the name of the Lord Jefus. 14 And when he would not be perfuaded, we ceafed, faying, The will of the Lord be done. 15 And after thofe days we took up our carriages, and went up to Jerufalem. 16 There went with us alfo certain of the difciples of Cefarea, and brought with them one Mnafon of Cyprus, an old difciple, with whom we fhould lodge. 21 And they are informed of thee, that thou teacheft all the Jews which are among the Gentiles to forfake Mofes, faying that they ought not to circumcife their children, neither to walk afterthe customs. 22 What is it therefore? The multitude muft needs come together: for they will hear that thou art come. 23 Do therefore this that we say to thee: we have four men which have a vow on them; 24 Them take and purify thy felf with them, and be at charges with them, that they may have their heads: and all may know that thofe things, whereof they were informed concerning thee, are nothing; but that thou thy felf alfo walkeft orderly, and keepest the law. 25 Astouching the Gentiles which believe, we have written and concluded that they obferve no fuch thing, fave only that they keep themfelves from things offered to idols, and from blood, and from ftrangled, and from fornication. 26 Then Paul took the men, and the next day purifying himself with them, entered into the temple, to fignify the accomplishment of the days of purification, until that an offering should be offered for every one of them. 27 And when the feven days were almost ended, the Jews which were of Afia, when they faw him in the temple, stirred up all the people, and laid hands on him. 28 Crying out, Men of Ifrael, help : This is the man that teacheth all men every where against the people, and the law, and this place: and further brought Greeks alfo into the temple; and hath polluted this holy place. 29 For they had feen before with him in the city, Trophimus an Ephefian, whom they fuppofed that Paul had brought into the temple. 30 And all the city was moved, and the people ran together: and they took Paul. and drew him out of the temple: and forthwith the doors were shut. 51 And as they went about to kill him, tidings came unto the chief captain of the band, that all Jerufalem was in an uproar: 32 Who immediately took foldiers and centurions, 862 Paul apprebended at Jerufalem. And he faid unto me, I am Jefus and when they faw the chief captain and the foldiers, they left beating of Paul. 38 Then the chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done. 34 And fome cried one thing, fome another, among the multitude: and when he could not know the certainty for the tumult, he commanded him to be carried into the cattle. 35 And when he came upon the flairs, fo it was, that he was borne of the foldiers for the violence of the people. 36 For the multitude of the people fol lowed after, crying, away with him. 87 And as Paul was to be led into the cattle, he faid unto the chief captain, May I fpeak unto thee? Who faid, Canft thou speak Greek? 38 Art not thou that Egyptian, which before thefe days madeft an uproar, and leddeft out into the wilderness four thoufand men that were murderers? 39 But Paul faid, I am a man which am a Jew of Tarfus, a city in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city: and, I befeech thee, fuffer me to fpeak unto the people. 40 And when he had given him licence, Paul flood on the flairs, and beckoned with the hand unto the people. And when there was made a great filence, he fpake unto them in the Hebrew tongue, faying, CHAP. XXII. 1 Paul declareth his converfion. 25 He efcapeth fcourging by the privilege of a Roman. MEN, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence, which I make now unto you. 2 (And when they heard that he fpake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more filence: and he faith) of Nazareth, whom thou perfecuteft. 9 And they that were with me faw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me. 10 And I faid, What fhall I do, Lord? And the Lord faid unto me, Arife, and go into Damafcus; and there it fall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. 11 And when I could not fee for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damafcus. 12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt here, 18 Came unto me, and stood, and faid unto me. Brother Saul, receive thy fight. And the fame hour I looked up upon him. 14 And he faid, The God of our fathers hath chofen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and fee that Juft One, and fhouldeit hear the voice of his mouth. 15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou haft feen and heard. 16 And now, Why tarrieft thou? Arife, and be baptized, and wash away thy fins, calling on the name of the Lord. 17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerufalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance; 18 And faw him faying unto me, Make hafte, and get thee quickly out of Jeru falem; for they will not receive thy teltimony concerning me. 19 And I faid, Lord, they know that I imprifoned, and beat in every fynagogue them that believed on thee; 20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was thed, I alfe was flanding by, and confenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that flew him. Farewell. 31 Then the foldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought bim by night to Antipatris. 32 On the morrow they left the horfemen to go with him, and returned to the cafile: 33 Who, when they came to Cefarea, and delivered the epiftle to the governor, prefented Paul alfo before him. 34 And when the governor had read the letter, he asked of what province he was. And when he understood that be was of Cilicia; He answereth for bimfelf. 9 And the Jews alfo affented, saying, that thefe things were so. 10 Then Paul, after that the gover. nor had beckoned unto him to fpeak, anfwered, Forafmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully anfwer for myfelf: 11 Because that thou mayeft understand that there are yet but twelve days fince I went up to Jerufalem for to worship. 12 And they neither found me in the temple difputing with any man, neither railing up the people, neither in the fynagogues, nor in the city; 18 Neither can they prove the things whereof they now accufe me. 14 But this I confefs unto thee, that after the way which they call herefy, fo worship I the God of my fathers, be lieving all things which are written in the law and in the prophets : 15 And have hope toward God, which they themfelves alio allow, that there shall be a refurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjuít. 16 And herein do I exercise my self, to have always a confcience void of offence toward God, and 10ward men. 17 Now after many years I came to 35 I will hear thee, faid he, when thine accufers are alfo come. I will know the uttermost of your matter. 23 And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul, and to let him have liberty,and that he should forbid none of his acquaintance to minifter or come unto him. 24 And after certain days, when Felis came with his wife Drufilla, which was a Jewels, he fent for Paul, and heard him concerning the faith in Chrift. 25 And as he reafoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled, and anfwered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a convenient feafon I will call for thee. come 26 He hoped also that money should thy-have been given him of Paul, that he might loofe him: wherefore he fent for him the oftener and communed with him. Pal accused. Chap. xxv. xxvi. 27 But after two years, Portius Fef-| tus came into Felix's room; and Felix, willing to thew the Jews a pleafure, left Paul bound. CHAP. XXV. Paul accused by the Jews before Feftus, appealeib unto Cefar. NOW when Feftus was come into the province, after three days he afcended from Cefarea to Jerufalem. Then the high priest and the chief of the Jews informed him againft Paul, and befought him, He is cleared by Feftus. 865 16 To whom I answered, It is not the manner of the Romans to deliver any man to die, before that he which is accufed have the accufers face to face, and have license to anfwer for himself concerning the crime laid against him. 17 Therefore when they were come hither, without any delay on the morrow I fat on the judgment feat, and commanded the man to be brought forth. 18 Against whom, when the accufers ftood up, they brought none accufation of fuch things as I fuppofed: 19 But had certain questions against S And defired favour against him, that he would fend for him to Jerufalem, lay-him of their own fuperftition, and of one ing wait in the way to kill him. But Feftus answered, That Paul thould be kept at Cefarea, and that he himself would depart thortly thither 5 Let them therefore, faid he, which among you are able, go down with me, and accufe this man, if there be any wickednefs in him. 6 And when he had tarried among them more than ten days, he went down unto Cefarea; and the next day fitting on the judgment feat, commanded Paul to be brought. 7 And when he was come, the Jews which came down from Jerufalem ftood round about, and laid niany and grievous complaints against Paul, which they could not prove : Jefus, which was dead, whom Paul affirmed to be alive. 20 And because I doubted of fuch manner of questions, I afked bim whether he would go to Jerufalem, and there be judged of thefe matters. 21 But when Paul had appealed to be referved unto the hearing of Auguftus, commanded him to be kept till I might fend him to Cefar. 22 Then Agrippa faid unto Feftus, I would alfo hear the man myself. Tomorrow, faid he, thou fhalt hear him. 28 And on the morrow,when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Feftus's command 8 While he answered for himself, Nei-ment Paul was brought forth. ther against the law of the Jews, neither against the temple, nor yet against Cefar, have I offended any thing at all. 24 And Feftus faid, King Agrippa, and all men which are here prefent with us, ye fee this man, about whom all the mul altitude of the Jews have dealt with me, both at Jerusalem, and aljo here, crying that he ought not to live any longer." 9 But Feitus, willing to do the Jews pleature, anfwered Paul, and faid, Wilt thou go up to Jerufalem, and there be judged of thefe things before me? 10 Then faid Paul, I ftand at Cefar's judgment feat, where I ought to be judged to the Jews have I done no wrong, as thou very well knoweft. 25 But when I found that he had committed nothing worthy of death, and that he himself hath appealed to Auguftus, I have determined to fend him. 26 Of whom I have no certain thing to write unto my lord. Wherefore have brought him forth before you, and fpecially before thee, O king Agrippa, that, after examination had, I'inight have 11 For if I be an offender, or have committed any thing worthy of death, I refufe not to die: but if there be none of these things whereof these accufe me, no man may deliver me unto them. Ifomewhat to write: appeal unto Cefar. 12 Then Feftus, when he had conferred with the council, anfwered, Halt thou appealed unto Cefar ? Unto Cefar thalt thou go. 18 And after certain days king Agrippal and Bernice came unto Cefarea to falute Feftus. 27 For it feemeth to me unreasonable to fend a prisoner, and not withal to fignify the crimes laid against him. CHAP. XXVI. 1 Paul, before Agrippa, declareth bis life, 12 and bis converfion. 24 Feftus chargeth him with madness. THEN Agrippa faid unto Paul, Thou 14 And when they had been there ma-art permitted to fpeak for thyfelf.
