merit of theirs either before or after their exercise of faith; and the inward or special efficacy of that invitation is the result not of any power or ability of man, but the gracious work of that Holy Spirit, "who, working when, and where, and how he pleaseth," is everlastingly sovereign and omnipotently free. As many as are called by the Gospel," says the Synod of Dort, "are sincerely called. For sincerely and in very truth God shows by his Word what is agreeable to him,-to wit, that those who are called should come to him. Moreover, to all those that come to him and believe, he promises rest to their souls, and life eternal."1

Those subjects are comprehended in Isaiah lv. 1-13, and lvi. 1-8, which in themselves are a

perfect whole. The verses were consecutively taken up and expounded by me to my own congregation, and the substance of that exposition is now presented to the public, with the hope that in this form it may not be entirely without fruit.

May that gracious Spirit who inspired the Gospel that it should be preached to all nations, who alone teacheth savingly and to profit, and who is able to bless the humblest instrumentality, breathe on the present effort, and direct it to His praise!
