DECLARATION OF FAITH AND COVENANT OF THE SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH, CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- 1840. BOSTON: No. 39, Merchants Row. 1840, ..... The following Declaration of Faith, and Covenant, was originally prepared by a Committee appointed for the purpose by the New Hampshire Baptist Convention. After suitable revision, it was unanimously approved by the Board of that Convention, and recommended by them to the Churches. Though, like every summary of the holy Scriptures, it is necessarily imperfect, yet it so excellently expresses the views of the Baptist Churches, and of our own especially, that, at a meeting of the Church, Februray 14, 1840, it was " Voted, That the Articles of Faith prepared by a Committee of the New Hampshire Baptist Convention, which have been read and considered by us, be printed for the use of the Church, and each member be furnished with a copy at such price as may be determined on by the Committee.", STATED MEETINGS. Conference Meeting in the Vestry every Tuesday evening. Church Covenant Meeting on Friday evening preceding the first Sabbath in every month. Church Meeting for business on the second Friday evening after the Friday preceding the first Sabbath in every month. Prayer Meeting for the success of Missions on the first Sabbath evening in every month. BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SECOND BAPTIST CHURCH IN CAMBRIDGE. About the year 1826, religious meetings began: to be held in the village of East Cambridge, which resulted in the establishment of the Baptist Church in this place. On the third of September, 1827, the Church was constituted, consisting of twenty members. On the tenth of October, 1827, a house of worship, 66 feet by 46, was finished and dedicated. Mr. JOHN E. WESTON, who had labored here for some time previous, was ordained on the same day as Pastor of the Church. Rev. Mr. WESTON resigned the pastoral charge of the Church April 7, 1831. Rev. JONATHAN ALDRICH became Pastor of the Church in June, 1833, and continued till June, 1835, when he resigned his charge. Rev. BELA JACOBS was installed Pastor, August 23, 1835, and continued to labor till his death, which occurred on Sabbath morning, May 22, 1836. Rev. NATHANIEL HERVEY was installed Pastor of this Church September 18, 1836. On the 14th of April, 1837, our place of worship was entirely consumed by fire; the cause of which is unknown. Our present place of worship was dedicated January 11, 1838. It is a brick building, 70 feet by 54, and cost about eight thousand dollars. Rev. Mr. HERVEY resigned the pastoral charge of the Church September 1, 1839. |
