On the 16th the Lords Proprietors of Carolina met Lord Craat Craven-Houfe, where his Excellency William Lord ven chofen Craven, was unanimously elected Lord Palatine of Lord Palathe faid Province, in the room of the Lord Granville, tine of Ca Jate Lord Palatine, deceas'd, whom his Grace the rolina 15. Duke of Beaufort fucceeded alfo in his Proprietorship.

Five Days before, George Brudenel, Earl of Cardi- The Earl of gan, abjured the Romish Religion, and receiv'd the Cardigan Sacrament according to the Rites of the Church of abjures PoEngland; upon which, the next Day, he took his pery 11th. Seat in the Houfe of Peers of the Parliament of Great Britain.

On the laft Day of January Sir Edward Gage, of Sir EdHengrave in the County of Suffolk, Baronet, died ward Gaye at his Houfe in Bloomsbury, London, in the 90th Year dies 31. of his Age.

On the 18th of February Sir Edward Seymour, Bas 170. Tonet, Member of Parliament for Exeter, died at his Seat at Maiden-Bradley, in Wiltshire. He was a Gentleman of a very ancient Family in the Weft of England, and even an Elder Branch of that of the Duke of Somerfet, and being poffefs'd of a great Eftate, he was a Member of all the Parliaments that were held ever fince the latter End of the Year 1661. in which he fhew'd himfelf an active Patriot, and a warm Stickler for the Church of England. In 1667. he promoted the Impeachment of the Earl of Cla rendon. On the 25th of February 1772. he was cho. fen Speaker of the Houfe of Commons; on the 9t of April 1673, made Privy-Counfellor; and foon after Treasurer of the Navy. On the 6th of March 1679. he was again chofen Speaker, but the King retuling his Approbation, the Parliament was prorogued to the 15th when the Commons chofe Serjeant Gregory to be their Speaker. In King James's Parliament, he made a bold Speech against a standing Army, and in the Convention Parliament, upon the Revolution, he oppos'd the Declaring the Prince of Orange King of England. Nevertheless, in 1692. he was made a Privy-Counsellor, and foon after conftituted one of the Lords of the Treafury. In the Year 1701. he forwarded in the House of Commons the Impeaching of the Earl of Orford, and the Lords Somers and Hallifax. Upon the Queen's Acceffion to the Throne, he was admitted into the Privy-Council, and made Comptroller of the Houthold, which Place, about two Years after, he was obliged to refign, by reafon of his morofé Temper, which gave fome Difguft to a Perfon in great Power. He was endow'd with great Natural Parts, which together with his long Experience in Parliamentary Affairs, gain'd him the firft Place among the leading Members of the Church-Party, by whom he was much regretted.

Dr. William Beveridge, Lord Bishop of St. Asaph, 1708. a Divine generally effeem'd, both at home and abroad, for his univerfal Learning, found Morals, MARCH. Pulpit Oratory, and folid Writings, died on Friday Dr. Beve the 5th of March, at his Lodgings in the Cloysters, ridge, BiWestminster-Abby, in the 71 Year of his Age. He hop of was educated in St. John's College, in the University St. Alaph of Cambridge, and on the 5th of Nov. 1684. he was dies, s. enftall'd Prebendary of Canterbury, in the Room of Dr. Du Moulin. Upon the Deprivation of Dr. Thomas Ken, Bishop of Bath and Wells, for not conforming to the Government in 1691. he confcienciously refused the Offer of that Bishoprick, though he was then Chaplain to King William and Queen Mary. About the beginning of the Year 1704, he was promoted to the See of St. Afaph, in which, upon his Death, he was fucceeded by Dr. William Fleetwood.

Sir John Turton, formerly one of the Judges of Sir John the King's-Bench, and Sir John Pole Member of Par- Turton, liament for Newport in Cornwal, died the 13th, as Sir John did allo Edward Strode, Efq; Member of Parliament Pole, for Chichester, and Charles Goring, Efq; for Staining, and Mr.Go

Anthony Duncomb, Efq; Brother to Sir Charles Dun- APRIL. comb, the prefent Lord-Mayor of London, and Mem- Mr. Dunber of Parliament for Heydon in Yorkshire, died the comb and 4th of April.

About a Week after Henry Fermin, Lord Jermin and Dover, a Roman Catholick, died alfo at his Seat in Cambridge-fhire, and having left no Iffue behind him, his Name was Extinct with him; but he left a confiderable part of his Eftate to Mr. Fermin Da vers, Son of Sir Robert Davers of the County of Suffolk, by his Lady, the eldest Daughter of the Lord Fermin, this Lord Fermin and Dover's eldelt Brother.

About the latter end of the fame Month died George Royce Doctor in Divinity, who on the 1ft of November 1691, was elected Provost of Oriel-College in Oxford, and afterwards made Dean of Briftol, in which laft place he was fucceeded by Mr. Booth, and in the other by Mr. George Carter.

Humphry Ridley, Doctor of Phyfick, and Fellow Ridley's. of the Royal College of Phyficiaus, London, died alfo in this Month. He wrote a Treatife call'd the Anatomy of the Brain.

On the 229 the Honourable Charles Watfon, Efq; eldest Son of the Lord Rockingham, marry'd the Lady Catherine Tufton, Daughter to Thomas Earl of Thanet.

-On the 7th of May Collonel Alnut died, as did Collonel Al- the next Day John de la Fontaine, Efq; a Gentleman nut and of great Hofpitality and Publick Spirit, at his LodgJohn de la ings in Bloomsbury-Square, in the 72 Year of his Fontaine, Age. By his Will he left 2000l. to Chelsea Hofpital; 2000l. to that of Greenwich, and 1000l. to, wards the finishing of St. Paul's.

On the 21ft of the fame Month died alfo the Lord Belhaven, defcended from Bruntwood, a third Son of the great and noble Family of Hamilton, in Scotland, He appear'd against a Popish Succeffor in the Scotch Parliament in 1681, for which he was committed to Prifon, and continued there till by Order of Parliament he was fet at Liberty. Upon the late Revolution he promoted the fettling the Crown on

King William and Queen Mary; and having raifed A. C. a Troop of Horfe, did confiderable Service against 1708. the Highlanders. Soon after he was made of the Privy-Council and Exchequer in Scotland, where he forwarded the Reftoration of the Presbyterian Government; and the Eftablishment of the Scotch African Company. In 1695 he was concern'd in the Farm of the Inland Excife in Scotland. In the Parliament of 1700 he zealously promoted the Act to prevent the Growth of Popery; the Act for a Habeas Corpus, and other wholesome Laws. In 1701 he travell❜d with his two Sons. In the Parliament of 1704 he ufed his utmoft Endeavours to get the Proteftant Succeffion fettled in Scotland upon Limitations: And after that Parliament, was made one of the Lords of the Treafury in Scotland. In 1706, when the Union came to be debated in the Parliament of that Kingdom, he joyned with those who ftrenuously oppos'd it: Which being afcribed to difaffection, upon the News of the Invafion, he was fent for by the Privy-Council of Scotland; confined first to his Chamber, and then in Edinburgh Caftle; from whence, about two Months after, he was fent up to London, and on the 17th of June, admitted to Bail. Four Days after he died of an Inflammation of his Brain, in the 52d Year of his Age, being born the 5th of July 1656. He was of a good Stature, well fet, of a healthy Conftitution, black Complexion, and graceful manly Prefence; had a quick Conception, with a ready and Mafculine Expreffion; and was fteddy in his Principles both in Politicks and Religion.

On the 6th of July the Lord James Cavendish was JULY. married to Mrs. Tales. And on the 8th his LordMy Lord fhip's Sifter, the Lady Elizabeth Cavendish was mar- James Caried to Sir John Wentworth.
