FOR

SCHOOL AND HOME USE.

With Marginal Notes,

AND

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES OF AUTHORS.

BY

P. R. JACKSON,

AUTHOR OF THE NEW STANDARD COPY BOOKS," &c.

[blocks in formation]

This Book has been prepared with the object of providing a selection of Poems adapted to the attainments of the children and younger pupil teachers in Elementary Schools. It will also be found very suitable for teaching the new subject, “ENGLISH," named in the Code of 1882. Many Grammar Schools and Colleges have adopted it as their text-book for English Literature.

COPIOUS NOTES accompany each poem, explaining almost every point of difficulty that occurs. These notes are placed in the margin, and consequently enable the pupil to obtain the explanation required more readily than if they were printed at the foot of the page or at the end of the poem.

SHORT BIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES of all the authors quoted are prefixed to the several poems.

For permission to use copyright pieces, the Compiler has to thank the liberality of Robert Browning, Esq.; Matthew Arnold, Esq.; Messrs. Longman & Co.; and Messrs. Macmillan & Co.

NOTE.—This book has been adopted by the London and many other School Boards, for Reading and Repetition in the Upper Standards, and for the specific subject of Literature.
