THE FIRST EDITION.

THIS little book has been drawn up under a deep conviction that there is nothing to prevent the boys of a public school from acting, not only on the dictates of prudence and morality, but also of real and spiritual religion; and with an earnest wish that it may be made, by God's blessing, one means among many others of preserving in the School something of the spirit of that great and good man who here laboured so heartily in the glorious work of christianizing the public education of England. It is therefore hoped that nothing unworthy of his teaching and his practice will be found in this book, which has been written principally in consequence of a request from his successor. It is probable, too, that had he been spared to us, such a publication would have been agreeable to his own wishes, from his having recommended the use of books of this character in the second sermon of his first volume.

Rugby, June 12. 1843.
