A NEW MUSIC BOOK,

With a new system for Teaching Singing-Schools and Training Choirs. BY PROF. A. N. JOHNSON,

Author of Thorough Bass," "Bay-State Collection," "Handel Collection," &c., assisted by E. H. FROST, called

THE PHYSIOLOGICAL SYSTEM OF CHURCH MUSIC.

The collection of Music, in addition to the instructions for Choirs, Musical Associations, Singing Schools, and the Home Circle, in this book consist of 1st. The Physiological System for Teaching Schools and Training Choirs. 2d. A complete collection of Hymn Tunes of the most interesting and useful character.

4th. A collection of Hymns set to music throughout.

5th. A collection of Sentences of a highly devotional character, for public worship.

6th. A collection of Psalms taken literally from the Bible, set to very simple but beautiful music, suitable to every occasion of public worship.

7th. The Cantata-The Morning of Freedom"-a truly superb production. The music is selected from Rossini, Mozart, Mendelssohn and others. The words are written expressly for this work by the celebrated musical. poet J. E. Johnson, Esq.

8th. Chants.

The Physiological System is divided into four departments. 1st. Musical Notation; 2d. Cultivation of the Voice; 3d. Musical Expression; 4th. The Musical Discipline.

The Department of Musical Notation is an easy and methodical system for imparting the ability to read music fluently, with numerous practical exercises, which are mostly popular Airs and beautiful Glees.

The department of the Cultivation of the Voice is by far the most minute and methodical system for developing and controling the voice which has been published in this country.

It is the invention of Professor Frost, one of the most accomplished and experienced teachers of the Voice in the United States; and is arranged into a singularly easy system by Professor Johnson, whose skill in simplifying every thing his pen touches is well known to all who have studied his celebrated Instructions in Thorough Bass," and his numerous other educational werks.

Every point connected with the development and culture of the voice is explained and illustrated so plainly, that every one can easily understand it. When it is considered that a mezzo-soprano treating her voice like a soprano, WILL RUIN IT, as will a baritone treating his voice line a tenor, a base like a baritone, etc., etc., the vital importance of the cultivation of the voice forming a part of the instructions in every Singing-School and Choir, can be readily understood.

The department of Musical Expression is divided into two parts. One termed "Mechanical Expression," or the expression which is given to a piece by mechanically obeying the marks of expression which are set to it; and the other termed "Emotional Expression," or the expression which is given to a piece by giving free play to the emotions.

The department of Musical Discipline sets forth the ability to implicitly and instantly obey the leader just as a soldier obeys his commanding officer, to be an acquisition which must be attained by study and practice, just as any other musical abilities must be acquired.
