Catarrh,
Bronchitis.

The practice of tak

ing children suffering from
Whooping Cough to the puri-
fying room of gas works, led to

a study of the cause which effected relief.

Cresolene is the resulting

product; a chemically pure distillate from
coal-tar of a greater antiseptic power
than carbolic acid.

Vaporized in the sick room, Cresolene
will give immediate relief. Its curative
powers are wonderful, at the same time
preventing the spread of contagious dis-
eases by acting as a powerful disinfectant;
harmless to the youngest child.

Cresolene is used with success both as a remedy and preventive in diphtheria, scarlet fever and measles. Sold by all druggists. Descriptive booklet on application. Schieffelin & Co., New York, U. S. Agts. Vapo-Cresolene Co., 69 Wall St., New York.

[Written for the MEDICAL Brief.] Nasal Catarrh, and Catarrh in General.

BY E. E. TRUITT, M. D.,
Maquon, Ill.

The literal meaning of nasal catarrh is an increased secretion from the mucous membrane of the nasal passages, perverted in character, and with pathological conditions of the mucous lining. In a state of health just enough mucus is secreted to keep the parts moist, and to keep the surfaces from adhering to each other. Any amount in excess of this constitutes diseased action, or an unhealthy condition of these parts. Nasal catarrh is divisible into two kinds, the acute and chronic: of the chronic there are two varieties, the wet and the dry, or ozena. Catarrh affects both the anterior and posterior nares.

Acute nasal catarrh may be defined as an hyperemia, or over-fullness of the blood-vessels of the nasal mucous membrane with blood, attended with an altered and excessive secretion of mucus; while chronic catarrh may be defined as an altered or morbid condi

tion of the nasal mucous membrane, as pertains to the epithelia, blood-vessels, nerves, and secreting cells. This is the form of catarrh that will receive most attention from our pen, as the acute form is more a symptom of some other disease, than a disease per se. The acute form may arise from any local irritant action of the Schneiderian membrane, or it may be a disturbance from taking cold, which is often the case. We will presume that the system is heated to a high degree. The blood is flowing freely and equally through every part of the body that receives blood. All at once it is subjected to a change, and cooled suddenly. As it is a principle of physics that cold contracts, the natural result of the change is contraction of the capillaries, or small vessels of the skin, and the circulation is thrown out of equilibrium. The blood is repelled inwardly. The vessels of the mucous membrane and the internal organs are over-full. The repulsion of blood may fall more heavily on some particular organ, or organs, than others, as, for instance, the lungs, and then we (Continued on page 772.)

PURGATIVES.

The evil effects resulting from the indiscriminate use of drastic purgatives and cathartics are well known to every practitioner. That they impair the physiological action of the liver and create chronic constipation, with the inevitable spasmodic demand for purgatives, is undoubted. Therefore, the rational treatment is to administer a mild hepatic stimulant; and of all the hepatic stimulants, CHIONIA is the best, as it does not dispose the bowels to subsequent costiveness.

CAUTION.

The great reputation of Kennedy's Pinus Canadensis has caused several cheap and irritating preparations to be sold as Pinus Canadensis. Some of these preparations are not only worthless, but absolutely harmful.

As a precaution, it is not only necessary to specify Kennedy's Pinus Canadensis, but also to see that Rio Chemical Co. is on the label. Cheap substitutes of reliable preparations of established reputation are constantly offered to druggists as "just as good," and the temptation to the druggist to make more profit is very great; hence, unless care is used in avoiding substitutes, the physician will invariably be disappointed in the results.
