Iffue of her Royal Highness the Princess Sophia, by his moft Serene Highness, Erneft - Auguft, Elector of Brunswick Lunenburgh, commonly call'd Elector of Hanover.

George-Lewis, eldeft Son and Heir, was born the 28th

of May, 1660. and, in the Year 1698, upon the Death of his Father, fucceeded him in all his Titles and Dominions, (that of Bifhop of Ofnabrugh excepted) and foon after the Death of the Duke of Glocefter, was elected Knight of the Garter. In the Year 1705, upon the Death of his Uncle the Duke of Cell, he likewife fucceeded him in that Duchy. He married, Anno 1682, Sophia-Dorothy, his Coufin-German, Daughter and only Child to his Serene Highnefs, George William, Duke of Brunswick-Cell; by whom he hath had Iffue,

George-Auguft, Prince Electoral, only Son, was born the 30th of October, 1683; and foon after the Death of his Grandfather, the Duke of Cell, he was elected Knight of the Garter; the Enfigus and Habit of which Order, were carried him by John Vanbrugh, Efq; Anno 1706. He married, in September, 1705, the Princefs WilhelminaCarolina, Daughter of John Frederick, Marquis of Bran denburgh-Anfpach, by Eleanor Erdmuth Luifa, his fecond Wife, Daughter of John George, Duke of Saxe-Eyfenach; which Princefs Wilhelmina was born the first of March, 1683, having had Iffue, by the faid Prince, one Son, viz.

Frederick-George, Prince of Brunswick, born at Hanover, January the 30th, 1706.

This moft Excellent Prince, the Hopes of Great-Britain, did, in a very particular manner, distinguish himself at the Battle of Audenarde, Anno 1708, giving fufficient Proof of his early Valour, as well as thofe other eminent Vertues, that are perfpicuous in him.

Sophia-Dorothy, only Daughter of George-Lewis, Elector of Hanover, and the Princefs Sophia - Dorothy, of Brunfwick-Cell, was born the 16th of March, 1687, D3 and,

and, on the 17th of June, (N. S.) Anno 1706, was contracted in Marriage to her Coufin-German FrederickWilliam, Prince Royal of Pruffia, only furviving Son to Frederick, King of Pruffia, by the Princefs Charlotte, his Second Wife, only Daughter of her Royal Highness the Princefs Sophia; which Marriage was publickly folemniz'd at Hanover, the 14th of November following.

Frederick-Auguft, Second Son of Erneft-August, Ele&or of Brunswick, and her Royal Highnefs the Princess Sophia, was born the third of October, 1661, and flain in Tranfylvania, valiantly fighting against the Turks, Anno 1690, unmarried.

Maximilian-William, Third Son of Ernest - August, Elector of Brunswick, and the Princefs Sophia, was born the 23d of December, 1666, now living at the Court of his Imperial Majefty, unmarried.

Charles-Philip, fourth Son of his Electoral Highness Erneft-August, and the Princefs Sophia, was born the 13th of October, 1669, and flain at the Battle of Caffaneck, in Transylvania, fighting against the Turks, Anno

1690.

Chriftian, fifth Son of his Electoral Highness of Brunswick, and the Princefs Sophia, was born the 29th of September, 1671, and was fhot in the Danube, after the Battle of Munderkingen, between the Imperial and French and Bavarian Forces, Anno 1703, unmarried.

Erneft-August, fixth Son of his Electoral Highness of Brunswick, and the Princefs Sophia, was born the 17th of September, 1672, and is yet living unmarried, at Hanover, at the Court of his elder Brother, George-Lewis, Elector, &c.

Sophia-Dorothy, only Daughter of Erneft-Auguft, Elector of Brunswick, and the Princefs Sophia, was born the 12th of October, 1668. And, Anno 1684, became the Second Wife of Frederick III. Marquis of Brandenburgh, Great Chamberlain, and Prince Elector of the facred Roman Empire, who, in the Year 1700, with the Confent of the late Emperor Leopold, affum'd the Title of King of Pruffia: This beautiful and excellent Princess died at Hanover, February, 1704-5, having had Iffue, by his Pruffian Majefty, two Sons, viz.

Frederick-William, Prince Royal of Pruffia, born the 4th of August, 1688, is yet living: (whofe Marriage with his Coufin-German Sophia-Dorothy, of BrunswickLunenburgh, has been before related.)

N fettling the Pedigree of this Noble Family, Sir William William Dugdale begins with William Howard, a Howard. learned and reverend Judge, in the latter part of King Edward I. and the beginning of King Edward II's Reign; who, the 23d of Edward I. had Summons, among the reft of the Judges of the Courts of Wefrminfter, and the King's learned Council, to the Parliament then held there, fo likewife to all the Parliaments, till the firft of Edward H. To him fucceeded, John, his Son and Heir; which John was one of the Bed-chamber to King Edward II. Sheriff of the Counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, from the 11th to the 16th of that King's Reign exclufively, ferv'd King Edward II. in his Wars against the Scots and French, and died in the 5th of Edward II. leaving John his Son and Heir.

Which John, in 10 of E. II. was conftituted, Admi- John, ral of the King's whole Flect, from the Mouth of the Thames Northward. To this Sir John fucceeded Sir Robert Howard, who, in the Second of Richard II. was.committed to the Tower, for detaining Margery de Narford, from Alice Lady Nevil, her Grandmother: This Sir Robert died in the 12th of Richart II. whofe Son

John (dying in his Life-time) left Iffue Robert, a Son,
who married Margaret, the Daughter and Coheir to
Thomas de Moubray, firft Duke of Norfolk, and had
Iffue John.

Which John began early to distinguish himfelf in the Wars of France, in the latter part of the Reign of King Henry VI. Alfo, in the Second of Edward IV. he had the joint Command, with the Lords Falconberg and Clinton, of the King's Fleet, and did confiderable Service against France; he was alfo at that time, Treafurer of the King's Houfhold. In the 10th of Edward IV. he was made Captain-General of the King's Forces at Sea, for baffling the Attempts of the Lancaftrians, then making powerful Head, under the ftout Earl of Warwick. The next Year, he was constituted Deputy-Governour of Calais, and the Marches, with the Lord Haftings; and, the Year following, fummon'd to Parliament, among the Barons of this Realm: And having behav'd himself with fingular Prudence and Fidelity, he obtain'd a Grant in fpecial Tail, of divers Lands and Mannors; alfo, in the 18th of Edward IV. a Grant of the Office of Conftable of the Tower of Landon, and, the next Year, was again made CaptainGeneral of the King's Fleet, against the Scots; alfo, inftall'd Knight of the Garter, in that King's Reign.

Having thus faithfully demean'd himfelf, during the whole Courfe of King Edward IV's. Reign; he continu'd no lefs ftedfaft to King Richard III. after he had got the Crown, (tho' without having any particular Hand in the evil Contrivances, and barbarous Actions, which were exercis'd in order thereto :) fo that to oblige him the more, he was, upon the 28th of June, in the first Year of that King's Reign, made EarlMarshal of England, and advanc'd to the Dignity of Duke of Norfolk, (Thomas, his Son, being, about that time alfo, created Earl of Surrey) and preceding that King's Coronation, was conftituted High Steward of England for the Day; alfo, Lord Admiral of England, Ireland and Aquitain, for Life; and, at the fame time, obtain'd a fpecial Grant of divers Mannors and Lordships.

But he enjoy'd not long these great Honours, and vaft Poffeffions; for, the next enfuing Year, being plac'd

in

in the Front of the King's Army, at Bofmorth-field, was there flain, with the King, Auguft the 22d, Anno 1485.

He married two Wives, first Catherine, Daughter to William, Lord Molins, by whom he had Iffue, Thomas, his Son and Heir, and four Daughters. Secondly, Margaret, Daughter of Sir John Chedworth, by whom he had Iffue, Catherine, a Daughter.

Which Thomas, his Son and Heir, being Efquire of Thomas. the Body to King Edward IV. was retain'd to serve him in his Wars; alfo, in the firft of Richard III. created Earl of Surrey (as has before been obferv'd ;) and tho' he took part with that King, being taken Prisoner at Bofworth, yet did King Henry VII. receive him. into Favour, and made choice of him for one of his Privy-Council, in whofe fourth Year, he was refstor'd to the Title of Earl of Surrey, and was efpecially employ'd by that King, in reftraining the Incurfions of the Scots, and fuppreffing fome Northern Infurrections. About which time, he fhar'd, with Maurice, Brother of William Marquefs Berkley, the Lands which came to them by Inheritance, by reafon of their Defcent from the Coheirs to Moubray, Duke of Norfolk; and in the 15th of Henry VII. attended the King and Queen to Calais, and was, the next Year, conftituted Lord Treafurer of England, which was renew'd to him in the Firft of Henry VIII. being likewife made one of that King's Privy Council, and the Year following, EarlMarthal of England.

In the 4th of Henry VIII. he was with the King at the Taking of Therrouenne, and Tournay, afterwards fent General against the Scots, and routed their Army at Flodden-Field, where King James IV. was flain. In this Battle, his Son Thomas, Lord Admiral, attended him, and with his other Son Edmund, led the Van. For which fignal Service, he had thereupon a fpecial Grant from the King to himfelf, and the Heirs-Male of his Body, of an honourable Augmentation of his Arms, to bear on a Bend thereof, the upper half of a Red-Lyon, (depicted as the Arms of Scotland are) pierc'd thro' the Mouth with an Arrow, being likewife advanced to the Dignity of Duke of Norfolk, which Title, John, his Father, (deriving his Defcent thro'
