FOR TUESDAY MORNING.

I.

As a word, which is our breath, doth reveal the thoughts of our hearts, so Christ, who was with God, and is God blessed for evermore, is THE WORD of God, and makes known to us the will of God, in his holy Gospel.

Before we begin to read the Holy Scriptures, we should pray to God to give us his grace to consider them with a humble and most devout attention, that we may understand and feel what they were designed to convey unto our souls. The Spirit of God persuades us in his Word, when we give it free course to our hearts, and receive it as the chief of all our earthly blessings.

In the beginning was THE WORd,

and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John i. 1.

I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them : I pray for them. John xvii. 8, 9.

Whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures. Acts xvi. 14; Luke xxiv. 45.

Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. Yea, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. Luke x. 23; xi. 28.

II.

The Holy Scriptures are the support of the divine life within us, and strengthen our faith in the overruling providence, and our trust in the effec

tual grace of God, which bringeth us salvation. The invisible things of God are clearly seen by the things that are made. As He directs the changes of day and night, and all things in the visible world, by his appointed and unchangeable laws, so doth He govern our hearts and souls by his law, which is just and holy and good, and requires of us the righteousness which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe.

The heavens declare the glory of God. Thou hast established the

earth and it abideth.

converting the soul. The fear of the Lord is clean, and endureth for ever. By them is thy servant taught. I will never forget thy precepts, for with them thou hast quickened me. Ps. xix.

Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness to every one that believeth. Rom. x. 4.

III.

God has left no one without some sense of his own holiness and justice. We none of us can believe, upon serious reflection, that it will be as with the righteous, so with the wicked; as with him who hath prayed for grace and repentance, so with the prayerless and impenitent; that it will be the same with those who believe not the record which God has given of his Son, and with the humble sup

plicant who trusts in his Maker's Word, and believes in Jesus Christ as his Saviour and Redeemer.

Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us. Isa. xxvi. 12.

For as the rain cometh down and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud: so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please. For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace. Isa. lv. 10–12.

Shall not the Judge of all the world do right? Gen. xviii. 25; Tit. ii. 11, 12.
