Excerpt from Environs of Edinburgh

In the following pages we have. Attempted to give a concise but comprehensive description of those scenes and ruins in the environs of Edinburgh which, from their great natural beauty or historical association and interest, have become celebrated.

In the order of arrangement we have followed the natural course of moving in a circle, taking the city as our centre; and, while moving gradually round it, describing first the objects of interest close at hand, afterwards those that are more distant. All necessary information is given in reference to conveyances, 8tc., so that it is hoped the work will form a complete guide to the localities of which it treats.

The grand view-point from which to take in, at a single sweeping glance, all the beau ties of the city of Edinburgh and its environs, is the summit of Arthur's Seat.
