destroy the nest of the Swallow-possibly the dim remnant of a tradition from pagan times, the bird having been held sacred to the household gods. It well deserves protection, for the confidence it displays, building under the shelter of man's roof, and within his reach. Its labours are undoubtedly of essential service, saving the crops from injury, perhaps annihilation, by insects.

The Swallow is a mason builder, evincing no little intelligence in the construction of its nest. It may be noticed in our roads, after a shower, industriously gathering the soft mud, taking a good bill-full, and plastering it on the wall; then ceasing until the work is firm, and so proceeding until the open cup-like nest is completed. It is now left to dry for several days, during which the pair appear to make an excursion of pleasure; on their return, the nest is warmly lined with feathers, and the business of the season commences.

Most of the old naturalists were strongly impressed with the belief that Swallows remained with us during winter. Isaac Walton states that they hybernate in the mud of ponds, &c. ; and White of Selborne undoubtedly leans to a similar notion. Whatever may be the fact, it is certainly true that a few Swallows appear on mild days in early spring, and retire from view in severe weather. Possibly the few birds that linger with us after the general flight in autumn, conceal themselves and remain with us during winter.
