And now the very stones of Edom cry out. In the beginning of this century, when infidelity was acquiring unwonted boldness, and nations were disowning the authority of God and his word, Divine Providence was raising the veil of ages from the ruins of ancient cities, that they, "like witnesses arisen from the dead," might stand forth anew before the world, to bear testimony to the truth of the Bible, and to declare that verily there is a God who still judgeth in the earth. "When man would not hear of hosannahs to the Son of David, or of Divine honours to the name of Christ, deserts immediately spake, and rocks cried out, and, responding to the voice of the prophets, testified of those who testified of Jesus." Edom has fulfilled its part of this holy service; Nineveh is arising to enter on the same Divine ministry; and this age will have the unenviable distinction of being an age of unbelief, if it hear not those echoes of a remote past, which are reverberated from the rocks and sculptures of a disentombed present: "The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God."
