deals with the chemical impurities frequently met with and the tests for them while a useful glossary at the end gives the Latin equivalent for the English words and phrases we wish to use in prescriptions. In the sections relating to the dispensing of the various preparations the directions are given tersely and clearly and in a thoroughly practical manner. The student who works systematically through the book should be well prepared to face any dispensing he may be called upon to do when he becomes a medical practitioner.

"Atlas and Epitome of Operative Gynecology." By Dr. OSKAR SCHAEFFER. Translated and edited by J. CLARENCE WEbster,

M.D. (Edin.), etc. Philadelphia, New York and London: W. B.
Saunders and Co., 1904. Price 13s. net.

THIS book is one of the series of Saunders' Hand Atlases, and it may be said at once that the 42 coloured plates maintain the level we should expect from previous publications. They are excellently lithographed and show clearly what they are intended to portray. The work does not claim to deal exhaustively with its subject but to represent Dr. Schaeffer's practice, and consequently several plates are devoted to operations now by no means frequently performed in this country, such, for example, as retro-fixation of the cervix with obliteration of the pouch of Douglas and supra-vaginal amputation of the cervix. The letterpress is not of equal merit with the plates, and the American Editor is evidently dissatisfied with many of the views expressed, stating his opinion to that effect in numerous parentheses. The Atlas should prove useful to those who are not able to obtain actual clinical experience.

"A Manual of Ambulance." By J. ScoTT RIDDELL, C.M., M.B., M.A. Fifth edition. London: Charles Griffin and Co., 1904. Price 4s. WHEN a book has reached its fifth edition in ten years it does not call for any long review as it has obviously attained a very considerable amount of favour. This work aims at being more exhaustive than most of those dealing with ambulance work, and the section devoted to stretcher drill, which is freely illustrated with photographs, is particularly good. The account given of the various accidents commonly met with and their first aid treatment is for the most part sound, but we cannot agree altogether with the author on the subject of hæmorrhage. It is not impressed on the student that both ends of a wounded artery or vein commonly bleed nor is elevation mentioned in the treatment of venous hæmorrhage. Too much importance also is attached to tourniquets which can rarely be applied with sufficient force to a conscious patient to obliterate an artery like the femoral. In the chapter dealing with anatomy and physiology there are several points such as the movements attributed to the epiglottis in which the author is not in accord with modern teaching. With these exceptions the book should prove useful to both students and teachers.
