SECTION IV.

And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all? And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. Heb. xi. 6. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that dilgently seek him. 2 John vi. (See Matt. v. 6, 7.) Matt. xix. 16-19. And behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good

thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. Luke xvi. 17. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail. Rom. x. 5. For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them. Gal. iii. 10. 12, 13. (Sce above.) Rom. x. 4. (See above.) Rom. viii. 2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 1 Cor. xv. 56, 57. The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law; But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Gal. v. 13-15. For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed ye be not consumed one of another.

SECTION VI.

For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death. Ye have heard that it was said
