GENTLEMEN,

W HEN a man thinks of a Dedication,

he generally looks around him for fome Patron from whom he has received favours, or from whom he expects to receive them. In the one case, he reminds his Patron of his bounty; and in the other he solicits it. The first is highly honourable on the score of gratitude; and the second may be very excusable on that of interest. Without throwing the smallest censure therefore on the ordinary motives of Dedicators, you will permit me to tread in a path, which though not new, is at present very little frequented. I take the liberty to dedicate to you these Lectures and Reflections, from no other motives in the world, but those of respect and veneration. I cannot indeed affirm that you have no claim on my gratitude, because I consider every indivi
