MY MESSAGE AND HOW I GOT TO IT, AND OTHER ESSAYS. By Rev. Kenneth Sylvan Guthrie. Several works bound in one volume. Duodecimo, pp. 312. Boston and Medford, Mass. The larger essay is "The Message of the Master." This is one discussing the prologue of John's Gospel, the only evangelist. that mentions The Logos. Mr. Guthrie goes to the foundation and gives the subject thorough analysis. The Philonic work is familiar to him and he puts intelligence into the discussion. It is surprising how little the clergy know about The Logos. Scarcely any of the clergy here know of work of Jocob Bryant on "Sentiments of Philo Judeus concering the 40402,” published in Cambridge, 1797, 8vo, pp. 290. We may publish an extract from Mr. Guthrie's "Message from the Master later.

"THE INCOMMUNICABLE NAME." "Is the omnific name mentioned in the Bible?" asks "A NEOPHYTE." The question is a little indefinite as to words. The above quotation, "the incommunicable name," is found in the book of the Apocryhpa called the Wisdom of Solomon xiv, 21, but not in the Old Testament. If the Tetragrammaton is meant by the "omnific name," then we answer, yes, by count it is said to be in the Old Testament 6,855 times, and translated "LORD " 6,848 times; the remaining seven times being by the seven sounded letters.

This questioner will find a brief bibliography of some a dozen titles in this serial, Vol. XI, p. 296, December, 1893, and many articles scattered through the seventeen volumes. We will add here also the title of a work on the sacred word which came into our possession about a year ago which will prove interesting to those who desire the sacred word to search:

The Vedic Philosophy, or an Exposition of the Sacred and Mysterious Monosylable (AUM). The Mândukya Upanishad (Text with English translation and commentary; and an introduction by Har Nârâyana. Boards, pp. xliv + 128 172. Bombay, 1895.

Magic Squares..

S. C. GOULD, Editor: Dear Sir and Brother: Please accept my thanks for the NOTES AND QUERIES I have received. I am still very much interested in "Magic Squares," and, therefore, make free to point out that the square in Vol. XVIII, No. 1, p. 26, in my opinion cannot be called a perfect magic square. I am aware that a square can very casily be made to add magically; but a perfect magic sqnare must be made of numbers succeeding in some arithmetical progression of the first order, and that every couple of numbers standing in corresponding cells must add alike.

The maker of the square in the January number of NOTES AND QUERIES remarks that " it has been claimed that a magic square composed of an even number of numbers, of sixteen, like the above, could not be formed that will add, odd, as 1899." I will only point out that the square on 6, consisting of the 36 first numbers, will add 111; the square on 10, similarly, will add 505; the square on 14, similarly, will add 1379, and so on. But these squares and all other squares on oddly even numbers I cannot make perfect, and I never have seen any such on oddly even numbers that were perfect. Is it possible to con struct such a square? For the present year two snch perfect squares may be made, as follows:

378 391 374 387 370

371 379 392 375 383

384 372 380 388 376

377 385 368 381 389

390 373 386 369 382

All the corresponding cells in the 5-square above, taken two

and two add 760; taken four and four they add 2 X 760, etc.

206 268 208 266 265 211 263 213

261 215 259 217 218 256 220 254
222 252 224 250 249 227 247 229
245 231 243 233 234 240 236 238
237 239 235 241 242 232 244 230
246 228 248 226 225 251 223 253
221 255 219 257 258 216 260 214
262 212 264 210 209 267 207 269

As to magic squares I am interested only in what I call perfect ones. Those of odd numbers are very easily made. Constant for all such squares art the two diagonals which may be written down first, and then the rest can be put down after the simple method as now in this paper. If we call the number on which the square is made R, we shall then have given :
