PSALM 67. VERSION 1.

S. M.

For the enlargement of God's kingdom.

TO bless thy chosen race,

In mercy, Lord, incline:

And cause the brightness of thy face
On all thy saints to shine.

That so thy wondrous way

May through the world be known;
While distant lands their tribute pay,
And thy salvation own.

Let differing nations join

To celebrate thy fame;

Let all the world, O Lord, combine
To praise thy glorious name.

O let them shout and sing,

With joy and pious mirth;

For thou, the righteous Judge and King,
Shalt govern all the earth.

PSALM 67. VERSION 2. 6.6.8.

For the spread of the gospel.

1 RISE, gracious God, and shine In all thy saving might;

2

And prosper each design

To spread thy glorious light:

Let healing streams of mercy flow,

That all the earth thy truth may know.

O bring the nations near,

That they may sing thy praise;

Let all the kingdoms hear

And learn thy holy ways:

Reign, mighty God, assert thy cause,
And govern by thy righteous laws.

PSALM 67. VERSION 3. c. M.

For national prosperity.

SHINE, mighty God, on Britain shine,
With beams of heavenly grace;
Reveal thy power through all our coasts,
And show thy smiling face.

Amidst our isle, exalted high,
Do thou our glory stand;
And like a wall of guardian fire,
Surround thy favour'd land.

Sing to the Lord, ye distant lands,

Sing loud with solemn voice,

While all our tongues exalt his praise,

And all our hearts rejoice.

Soon shall thy name, from shore to shore,
Sound all the earth abroad;

And distant nations know and love

Their Saviour and their God.

Christ's ascension and its consequent blessings.--v. 17, 18.

LORD, when thou didst ascend on high,
Myriads of angels till'd the sky;

Those heavenly guards around thee wait,
Like chariots that adorn thy state.

Not Sinai's mountain could appear
More glorious when the Lord was there,
While he pronounc'd his dreadful law,
And struck the chosen tribes with awe.

How bright the triumph none can tell,
When the rebellious powers of hell,
That thousand souls had captive made,
Were all in chains like captives led.

Rais'd by his Father to the throne,
He sent the promis'd Spirit down,

With gifts and for rebel men,

That God might dwell on earth again
PSALM 69. L. M.

Pleading with God in affliction,'
GOD of my life, to thee I call,
Afflicted at thy feet I fall;

When the great waterfloods prevail,
Leave not my trembling heart to fail.
Friend of the friendless and the faint,
Where shall I lodge my deep complaint?
Where but with thee, whose open door
Invites the helpless and the poor?

Did ever mourner plead with thee,
And thou refuse that mourner's plea?
Does not the word still fix'd remain,
That none shall seek thy face in vain?
If poor, unknown, despis'd, forgot,
Yet God, my God, forgets me not;
And he is safe and must succeed,
For whom the Lord vouchsafes to plead.

PSALM 71. PART 1.

C. M.

The saint's reflection and hope.-v. 5—9.

1 MY God, my everlasting hope, I live upon thy truth;

2

Thy hands have held my childhood up,
And strengthen'd all my youth.

Still has my life new wonders seen
Repeated every year;

Behold, my days that yet remain,
I trust them to thy care.

3

Cast me not off when strength declines,
When hoary hairs arise;

And round me let thy glory shine,
Whene'er thy servant dies.

Then in the history of my age,
When men review my days,
They'll read thy love in every page,
In every line thy praise.

PSALM 71. PART 2. c. M.

The Lord our strength and righteousness.—v. 14—17.
MY Saviour, my Almighty friend,
When I begin thy praise,

Where will the growing numbers end,
The numbers of thy grace?

Thou art my everlasting trust,

Thy goodness I adore

Still to my soul thy grace impart,
That I may love thee more.

My feet shall travel all the length
Of the celestial road,

And walk with courage, in thy strength,
To view my Father God.

When I am fill'd with sore distress,
O'erwhelm'd with guilt and sin,

I'll plead thy perfect righteousness,
And mention none but thine.

How will my lips rejoice to tell
The victories of my King!

My soul, redeem'd from sin and hell,
Shall his salvation sing.

Awake, awake, my tuneful powers!
With this delightful song

I'll entertain the darkest hours,
Nor think the season long.

PSALM 72. VERSION 1. c. M.

The happiness of Christ's kingdom.-v. 12, 17-19.

JESUS shall set the needy free,
When they for succour cry;
Shall save the helpless and the poor,
And all their wants supply.

The memory of his glorious name
Through endless years shall run;
His spotless fame shall shine as bright
And lasting as the sun.

In him the nations of the world
Shall be completely bless'd;
And he the only source of bliss
By all shall be confess'd.

Let earth be with his glory fill'd,
And ever bless his name;

Whilst to his praise the listening world
Their glad assent proclaim.

PSALM 72. VERSION 2. L. M.

The universal and happy reign of Christ.—v. 5, 15.
JESUS shall reign where'er the sun
Doth his successive journeys run;

His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
To him shall endless prayer be made,
And praises throng to crown his head:
His name like sweet perfume shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.

People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on his love with sweetest song;
And infant voices shall proclaim
Their early blessings op his name.
