6. Show that, if a triangle is immersed in a heavy homogeneous liquid with its vertex in the surface, the locus of its centre of pressure for different positions is a straight line parallel to the base.

7. Show that a body floating in water is in stable equilibrium for vertical displacements. Investigate the condition of stability for angular displacements, the body being symmetrical about an axis.

8. Define and prove the existence of two principal points for a system of lenses. Find these points for a double concave lens whose radii of curvature are equal.

9. Explain the construction of an astronomical telescope; and find the magnifying power of such a telescope when fitted with a Ramsden eye-piece.

10. Show that the constant of refraction for a heavenly body may be deduced from observations made on a circumpolar star.

CHEMISTRY.

Examiner-PROFESSOR SENIER.

[Give the results at which you arrive, together with full experimental proof.]

1. A purple powder. Identify it. [Potassium permanganate.]

2. A yellow-white deliquescent solid. Search for one basic and one acidic radical. [Mercuric nitrate.]

3. A white powder. Identify it. [Lead hydroxycarbonate.]

4. A blue-grey powder. Search for one basic and one acidic radical. [Ferrous phosphate.]

ENGINEERING.

Examiner-PROFESSOR TOWNSEND.

1. Describe the adjustments of the Dumpy level, and read the vernier set before you.

2. The radius of a railway curve is 5 furlongs 3 chains, and the angle between the extreme tangents 128° 26'; calculate the distance between the intersection of the tangents and the middle point of the curve in chains.

3. The extreme depths of a cutting are 21 and 15 feet, the length is 5 chains, the ratio of slopes 1 horizontal to 1 perpendicular, and the base 30 feet; calculate the number of cubic yards in the cutting, and of square yards in the slopes.

4. The cross-section of a cutting is in sidelong ground, the central depth is h, the half base bo, the slopes of the cutting 8, and the side slope of the ground r; calculate, in terms of these quantities, the horizontal widths of the slopes.

5. Reduce the accompanying figure to its equivalent triangle, and find the acreage in Irish and statute measure.

6. A level is set up at a point A in a direct line between two points B and C; the reading on B is 12.57 feet, and its distance from A is 5 chains; the reading on C is 6.30 feet, and its distance from A is 20 chains: calculate the difference in level between the points B and C, taking the curvature of the Earth into account.

7. The flow from a rusted iron pipe is 780 gallons per minute, the length of the pipe is 6 miles, and its diameter is 18 inches; calculate the head necessary to produce this discharge.

8. From Francis' formulas for the flow of water over a horizontal weir, deduce the formula for the discharge in a V-notch.

9. Write a specification for the roofing and slating of a collar-brace roof, giving the scantlings of the timber members.

10. Show, by means of elevations and a vertical crosssection, how the wall of a house is formed over the ope of a window.
