THE former edition of this work, consisting of a thousand copies, having been sold within eighteen months from the date of publication, the Author has been induced to prepare the present volume. The work has been remodelled, and the amount of information nearly doubled. The area of twenty miles around Bridge of Allan, the extent of the district described in the former volume, has been considerably extended, and some portions of scenery within this area, formerly omitted, have been delineated. Biographical notices of remarkable persons connected with the district have been introduced; the geological and botanical features of the more interesting localities have been recorded; the more important or curious etymologies have been explained; and some legendary traditions have been added.
