There has been a great deal of reading of Newspapers this year. People have eagerly opened their papers to see what was "the last News," and no wonder, for in this great war which is now being carried on against Russia, every British heart feels interest. When so many of our countrymen are even now fighting on the field of battle, no wonder that we who are living quietly at home, feel anxious to know whether they are gaining victories or suffering defeat. Now, your own little Newspaper tells you of no "glorious victory," in which our enemies lie dead and stiffened on a bloody field, but yet it does tell of victories and of soldiers going forth to fight, aye, and oftentimes losing their lives in the conflict. But in these battles no cannon's roar is heard-ther are no groans of the wounded and the dying. The soldiers who go forth in this holy war carry no weapon but the sword of the Spirit. They fight against Ignorance and Idolatry, Superstition and Sin, and they have a glorious Captain, the Lord of Hosts, He it is that doth go before them. Do you love to read of the victories of King Jesus? Does it gladden your hearts to hear how rebels in India, and Burmah, and Calabar, and Polynesia, have laid down their arms and bowed at His feet, lowly and loving subjects ? Oh, it would be far better news to hear of the kingdoms of this world becoming the kingdoms of our God and of His Christ, than to hear of the most splendid conquests gained by British arms. |
