the buriers have buried it in the valley of Hamon16 Gog. And alfo the name of the city fhall be Ha17 monah*: thus fhall they cleanfe the land. And thou fon of man, Thus faith the Lord God, Speak unto every feathered fowl, and to every beast of the field, affemble yourfelves, and come; gather yourfelves on every fide to my facrifice † that I do facrifice for you, even a great facrifice upon the mountains of Ifrael, that ye may eat flesh and drink blood. 18 Ye fhall eat the flesh of the mighty, and drink the blood of the princes of the earth, of rams, of lambs, and of goats, of bullocks, all of them fatlings of Ba19 han. And ye fhall eat till ye be full, and drink till ye be drunken, of my facrifice, which I have facri20 ficed for you. Thus ye fhall be filled at my table with horfes and chariots, with mighty men, and 21 with all men of war, faith the Lord God. And I fet my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen fhall fee my judgment that I have executed, and my 22 hand that I have laid upon them. So the house of Ifrael fhall know that I am the Lord their God from 23 that day and forward. And the heathen fhall know that the houfe of Ifrael went into captivity for their iniquity: because they trefpaffed against me, therefore hid I my face from them, and gave them. into the hand of their enemies; fo fell they all by 24 the fword. all their trefpaffes whereby they have trefpaffed against me, when they dwelt fafely in their land, 27 and none made them afraid *. When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies lands, and am fanctified 28 in them in the fight of many nations; Then fhall they know that I am the Lord their God which. caufed them to be led into captivity among the heathen but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. 29 Neither will I hide my face any more from them : for I have poured out my fpirit upon the houfe of Ifrael, faith the Lord God.

This long and circumftantial prophecy contained in these four chapters of Ezekiel, if there were no other in the whole fcripture relating to that fubject, would be sufficient to ascertain the future restoration of Judah and Ifrael. For, the prophecy here contained is either to be taken in an allegorical fenfe, and applied to the Gentile churches; or it is already fulfilled in a literal fenfe, by fome paft restoration; or it is yet to be accomplished by a future one.

* All their confufion and offence they have done against me shall be taken away and fo fafely fhall they dwell in their lande, that no man fhall make them afrayed.

But

But I have fhewn from the words of the prophecy, that it cannot be taken in an allegorical sense, nor is in a literal fenfe already fulfilled; and therefore it remains yet to be accomplished by a literal restoration of the Jews and ten Tribes, which is what I have undertaken to prove.

OBADIAH prophefied about the year 587 before Chrift.

XLII.

O BAD. 17. But upon mount Zion fhall be deliverance, and there fhall be holiness, and the house 18 of Jacob fhall poffefs their poffeffions. And the houfe of Jacob shall be a fire, and the houfe of Jofeph a flame, and the houfe of Efau for ftubble; and they fhall kindle in them, and there fhall not be any remaining of the house of Efau, for the Lord 19 hath spoken it. And they of the fouth fhall poffefs the mount of Efau; and they of the plain, the Philiftines and they fhall poffefs the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin fhall poffefs 20 Gilead*. And the captivity of this hoft of the

:

The playne feldes shall Ephraim and Samaria poffefs; and the mountaynes of Galaad fhall Benjamin have. TIND.

In the tranflation made in the time of queen Elizabeth, the verfe is thus tranflated.

19 And they shall poffefs the fouth fide of the mount of Efau, and the plain of the Philistines: and they shall poffefs the fields of Ephraim, and the fields of Samaria, and Benjamin fhall have Gilead.

children of Ifrael fhall poffefs that of the Canaanites, even unto Zarephath; and the captivity of Jerufalem, which is in Zepharad, fhall poffefs the 21 cities of the fouth. And Saviours fhall come upon mount Zion, to judge the mount of Efau, and the kingdom fhall be the Lord's.

That this prophecy relates to the times after the future return of the Ifraelites, appears from it's fpeaking of Ephraim's poffeffing the land. Our tranflation indeed fays, (contrary to the context) that thofe of the fouth fhall poffefs the fields of Ephraim and Samaria; whereas the very next verfe declares, that the captivity of Jerufalem shall poffefs the cities of the fouth.

The 19th verfe is, therefore, much better rendered in the old tranflation.

DANIEL may be confidered in fome respects as the greatest of all the Prophets. For his Prophecies not only relate to the affairs of Judab and Ifrael, but also to the feveral monarchies and kingdoms that should arife fucceffively in the world from his time to the confummation of all things. True it is, we have fome predictions relating to these in many of the preceding and cotemporary Prophets; but none of them can be compared with thofe clear and circumftantial Prophecies, concerning the future ftate of the feveral empires and kingdoms of the world, which are delivered in this moft eminent prophet. If

my fubject had been that of Prophecies in general, I fhould have found in them many remarkable predictions to expatiate upon; but as my design is only to point out fuch Prophecies as have relation to the future return of the Jews, or events that fhall be cotemporary therewith; I fhall only felect thofe paffages in him which relate to my fubject. And the firft of them is chap. vii. where, after defcribing the four monarchies, the ten kingdoms which fall arife out of the fourth monarchy, and that other which fhall arife after them, and speak great words against the most High, he adds,

XLIII.

DAN. vii. 26. But the judgment fhall fit, and they fhall take away his dominion, to confume and 27 deftroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and donion, and the greatnefs of the kingdom under the whole heaven, fhall be given to the people of the faints of the moft high, whofe kingdom is an everlafting kingdom, and all dominions fhall ferve and obey him.

Now the people of the faints of the most high, in all the prophetic writings of the Old Teftament fignifies the people of Ifrael; and therefore it is here plainly foretold, that they shall enjoy a kingdom and dominion under the Heaven, i. e. upon earth, which fhall be an everlafting kingdom, or which, as it is explained chap. ii. 44. Shall NEVER be deftroyed: and the kingdom fhall not be left to other people. The next paffage that relates to the refto
