THE friends of pure and scriptural Christianity, have long wished for the establishment of a periodical work in Scotland, entirely devoted to the promotion of Free Inquiry in Religion, the inculcation and defence of the doctrines of the New Testament, the consistent assertion of the sufficiency of the Scriptures, and the upholding of the sacred right of individual judgment. Whilst most of the sects into which the professing Christian world is divided, have their public channels of information, there was every reason for desiring that the professors of Christian Uni. tarianism in Scotland, should have their monthly publication likewise. 1

Various causes, which it is unnecessary to enumerate, have hitherto delayed the accomplishment of this wish. But the time seems now to have arrived, when such a publication would be likely to meet with adequate support. The spirit of the age is favourable to its success. Research and inquiry are abroad. Education is almost universally diffused. Mechanics' and similar institutions, for the attainment of general and scientific knowledge, are establishing. Innumerable publications, in almost every department of literature, are constantly issuing from the press. And the beneficial result is visible in the improvements which are taking place in every art and science.

Theology alone cannot long remain an exception. The human mind, when enlightened on other subjects, will not submit to implicit belief even in religion. It will dare to exercise the noblest prerogative with which the Creator has endowed his creatures, to
