There is a striking similarity of circumstances in the two events. Was Christianity preceded by the long and gloomy night of ignorance? The Reformation was immediately consequent on what are emphatically termed "the dark ages." Was the one the day-star from on high, to exhilarate the drooping spirit of mortality? The other was the dawn of the morning of the mental resurrection. Was the first the service of perfect freedom? The last was a calling to liberty, and the glad shout was re-echoed from many a land. Was the former an emancipation from the authority of lords many? The latter was an attempt to wrench the yoke of bondage from the souls of men. Was the religion of the Saviour calculated to make men think and reason, and to animate them to virtuous exertion, by ushering them into the glorious liberty of the children of God? The efforts of Wickliffe, of Huss, and of Luther, were well adapted to bring men from darkness to light, and, instead of crouching like slaves before the frowns of vindictive ecclesiastical tyranny, to teach them to vindicate their privileges, as beings created in the Almighty's image. Did the Eternal God put his seal to the one, by enabling his messengers to work miracles, and signs, and mighty wonders? The finger of the Most High is not less visible in the support of the other, by the admirable adaptation of circumstances and events which preceded and accompanied the Reformation.
