HE benefits accruing to literature from the pa

tronage of great and judicious persons, has generally been deemed a sufficient excuse for ad

dresses of this nature; but however plausible such a reason might seem, the editor of the following piece had forborne to avail himself of it, or to request the patronage of so discerning a judge as yoursele if he had not hoped that his presumption would have carried its ein apology with it, and been conscious that, while he was soliciting Mr. Popham's protection for fo valuable a work as the Complete Angler, he was at once indulging his curiosity, and gratifying his benevolence.
