THE GERMANIC REVIEW

VOL. II-OCTOBER 1927 - No. 4

TO CAMILLO VON KLENZE:

It is with a feeling of deep respect, not unmixed with regret, that the present number of the GERMANIC REVIEW is dedicated to you on the occasion of your retirement from active academic duties. We congratulate you on the leisure of an emeritus, which we are convinced will insure further production in those research fields which you have already cultivated with distinction. But in common with all American Germanists we regret that with your removal to Germany, higher studies in German literature in this country lose the inspiration of your pen and voice.

To those who have followed the progress of the study of German literature in America in the last quarter-century, your work and personality have grown constantly in importance. It is not proper to attempt to draw the sum of the achievements of a scholar who may still look forward to many years of productive life. We cannot, however, forego a word of gratitude in recognition of the spirit which marks your contribution to our understanding of German literature in the nineteenth century, from your early studies in Lenau down to your latest work, recently reviewed in this journal. In two respects this spirit is unique: in its reverence for the soul of the Dichtung in its subtlest manifestations, and in the freedom of treatment which places, with sure hand, the work of German literature in a European perspective. This command of perspective, possible only to one who knows as you do the literatures of Germany's Romance neighbors, is an inspiration to your less gifted colleagues.
