Notre pensée est d'identifier l'élève au génie A FEW WORDS TO THE READER. THE success of the "Recueil Choisi," and the help it has afforded to those desirous of acquiring the French language, are two facts long since undeniably established. Our task in carrying the present edition through the press has merely consisted of modernizing a few antiquated and obscure passages amongst the extracts given. By way of completing the work, we have thought it expedient to add a selection of English Poems, both ancient and modern, and some few French ones by Arnault, Emile Deschamps, Victor Hugo, and Millevoye, to which we add two or three trifles of our own; taking care to place the French translations opposite the English poems, and the English translations opposite the French poems. Tel est le vœu de L'EDITEUR. is to initiate our readers into the poetic beauties of both languages, by facilitating a comparison between the originals and the translations. We doubt not but this addition to the standard work will leave pleasant recollections in the minds of our young readers, considering the merit of the English Poets we have quoted.
