We take the greatest of pleasure in announcing the arrival of a new book. This volume is of great value whereon the studious physician may desire to use a reference book. It is of the size that permits to be carried in the pocket. It has flexible covers of leather, and presents a very neat and tidy appearance. We fully realize that it would be carrying coals to Newcastle to enter into any considerable disseration upon this valuable old volume. Reader, if you wish for what is best, and have made a firm resolution to devote the rest of your life to Homœopathy and to suffering humanity, buy this work. When yon have gotten a copy read it, reread it, ponder over over it, and then read it again. Have it always at hand, sleep with it, if needs be, but have it ever ready for use. Medical Current.

A HAND-BOOK OF

MATERIA MEDICA AND HOMEOPATHIC THERAPEUTICS,

By Dr. TIMOTHY FIELD ALLEN.

Royal quarto, 1165 pages, half morocco, $15.00.

"There can be no question but that Dr. Allen has placed the Homoeopathic profession under a lasting debt of gratitude for this most beautiful and perfect of Materia Medicas. The superlative degree of comparison can alone voice our admiration of the work. It 18 one of the finest books that has ever reached our review table; and after browsing in its rich leafiness for several months in the hope of saying something markedly different from what has already filled the critiques in other journals, we find our praise and recommendation tame and pointless-a more than twice-told tale. We have made use of this volume on an average of half-a-dozen times a day since its receipt, aud in no instance have we had cause to regret the time given to looking up mooted points or clearing away our ignorance, and we have arrived at the conclusion that with this HANDBOOK at hand, assisted by the GENERAL SYMPTOM REGISTER, together with the promised THERAPEUTIC POCKETBOOK of Benninghaussen, it mnet truly be an intricate and involved case when these volumes, understandingly handled, canuot throw light sufficient to make a prescription. . . . . Of its intrinsic worth, what can be said that will add one laurel more to the wreath with which the profession has long since crowned the work of Dr. Allen?"-From the American Homeopath.

A

conductor on a Western Express is the marvel of those who have been let into his secret. Although having had both of his feet amputated, he is a conductor of extraordinary ability.

He passes through his train when going at the rate of fifty miles an hour; be collects and punches tickets with the suavity of one proud of his position. The car jolts, hitches, sways, and he retains his balance without the least awkward ess.

At stations he alights, with agility, watches his pass ngers and gives signals, boards his train and walks the passage way with the steadiness of one possessing his natural legs.

Day after day for three years he has performed this round of duty, and not a soul has had occasion to suspect that he operates on a pair of artificial les with rubber feet, and only those to whom he voluntarily reveals his condition ever know of his dependence on ar ificial extremit es. His movements are graceful, his appearance is natural, his step is firm and elas ic and his power is complete.

All this is made possible by the virtues of rubber, which largely composes the feet; the old methods of artificial limbs, wih wooden feet and meel auical joints, would

render this man unsafe, tottlish, unsteady, and unfit for a position that requires sound footing. The engraving represents Mr. Wade operating on his artificials in his chosen profession.

Conductors, engineers, firemen, brakemen, and men of all trades, who have met with the loss of either extremities, have been restored, and enabled to resume their labors by the use of artificial limbs with rubber hands and feet.

Subjects can remain at home and have artificials made, with fit guaranteed. One half of the legs and arms are made from measurements and profiles, without the presence of the wearer.

Indorsed by the United States Government, the Industrial Exbibition Commissioners of New York, Philadelphia, Atlanta, New Orleans, etc., the eminent Surgeons in the country, the Press, and over 9,000 men, women, and children who wear them, residing in all parts of the world.

A treatise of 400 pages, with 200 illustrations, and 1,000 testimonials, sent to those needing legs or arms, who will give a description of their case. The same will be sent .o Physicians and Surgeons free of charge.
