THE first and second of the following Discourses were written and published more than twelve years ago. The first appeared originally in a Theological Journal, and the second as a tract for distribution. Both have been frequently reprinted. The Author, in yielding to wishes for their republication, expressed by those who have found them useful, has thought it best to leave unaltered their original form, though exhibiting a past, rather than the present condition of his own mind; because he believes it is to minds in a similar state that they are at all likely to be helpful, while the substance of his convictions remains unchanged. The third discourse is of more recent date. It was prefixed to Lectures on the Epistle to the Romans, of which but a small part has been published. Plumstead Common, Woolwich, ON THE DIVINE WILL. MUCH difficulty in apprehending truth, and much opposition to some of its most important principles, arise from regarding the Will of God and the Decrees of God as things identical. The following remarks are designed, by His blessing to shew, that while his decrees can never fail to be accomplished, it is absolutely necessary for his honour, and for the practical use of all revelation, to acknowledge that his will is often resisted.
