thee! &c. Thou shalt hide them, &c. derness? &c. A fire was kindled -Ps. xxxi. 1. 19, 20. 24. against Jacob, &c. because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation: thongh he had commanded the clouds, &c.-Ps. lxxviii. 19. 21-23. cvi. 24-26.

He that trusteth in the Lord, mercy shall compass him about.-Ps. xxxii. 10. The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought, &c. The counsel of the Lord standeth for ever.Ps. xxxiii. 10, 11. Prov. xix. 21. Isa. xlvi. 10.

Trust in the Lord, and do good: so shalt thou dwell in the land, &c. Commit thy way unto the Lord: trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass, &c. The salvation of the righteous is of the Lord: he is their strength in the time of trouble; and the Lord shall help them, &c. He shall deliver them, &c. because they trust in him.-Ps. xxxvii. 3. 5. 39, 40.

Blessed is that man that maketh the Lord his trust.-Ps. xl. 4. lxxxiv. 12. He maketh wars to cease, &c. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted, &c. The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.-Ps. xlvi. 9—11.

I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.-Ps. lii. 8.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee.-Ps. lv. 22.

What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee. In God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.-Ps. lvi. 3, 4. 11.

For my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpassed.-Ps. lvii. 1. lxi. 3, 4.

Through God we shall do valiantly, for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.-Ps. lx. 12.

In God is my salvation, and my glory: the rock of my strength: my refuge is in God. Trust in him at all times, ye people, &c. God hath spoken once, twice have I heard this, that power belongeth unto God. Ps. lxii. 7, 8. 11, 12. lxi. 2.

The God of Israel is he that giveth strength and power unto his people. -Ps. lxviii. 35.

They spake against God: they said, Can God furnish a table in the wil

The Lord reigneth, the Lord is clothed with majesty, the Lord is clothed with strength, &c.-Ps. xciii. 1. xcvii. 1. cxlvi. 10. Rev. xix. 6.

The righteous, &c. he shall not be afraid of evil tidings: his heart is fixed, trusting in the Lord.-Ps. cxii. 6, 7.

It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord, than to put confidence in princes.-Ps. cxviii. 8,9.

My help cometh from the Lord; which made heaven and earth, &c. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.-Ps. cxxi. 2-4.

The Lord is great and our Lord is above all gods. Whatsoever the Lord pleased did he in heaven and in earth.-Ps. cxxxv. 5, 6.

Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God; which made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever.-Ps. cxlvi. 5, 6.

He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds: he telleth the number of the stars. Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite, &c.—Ps. cxlvii. 3, &c.

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not to thine own understanding: in all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.-Prov. iii. 5, 6.

Commit thy works unto the Lord,

and thy thoughts shall be established, &c. Man's heart deviseth his way, but the Lord directeth his steps, &c. Whoso trusteth in the Lord, happy is he.-Prov. xvi. 3. 9. 20.

The name of the Lord is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.-Prov. xviii. 10.

There is no wisdom, nor understanding, nor counsel against the Lord. The horse is prepared against the day of battle; but safety (or victory) is of the Lord.-Prov. xxi.30,31. xix. 21. Whoso putteth his trust in the Lord, shall be safe: many seek the ruler's favour; but every man's judgment cometh from the Lord.-Prov. xxix. 25, 26.

If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.-Isa. vii. 9. Associate yourselves, &c. take counsel together, and it shall come to nought speak the word and it shall not stand for God is with us.-Isa. viii. 9, 10. Jer. i. 18, 19. I will trust, and not be afraid; for the Lord Jehovah is my strength.Isa. xii. 2.

For the Lord of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it? and his hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back ?—Isa. xiv. 27.

There shall be desolation, because thou hast forgotten the God of thy salvation; and hast not been mindful of the rock of thy strength.-Isa, xvii. 9, 10.

Thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress a refuge from a storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.-Isa. xxv. 4.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusteth in thee: trust ye in the Lord for ever, for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength; for he bringeth down, &c.-Isa. xxvi.3-5. Behold the Lord hath a mighty and a strong one.-Isa. xxviii. 2. 6.

The Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I

cried concerning this: their strength is to sit still, &c. For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength; and ye would not, &c.-Isa. xxx. 7. 15.

Behold the Lord God will come,&c. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd, &c. Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven, &c.-Isa. xl. 10-12.

I the Lord, the first, and with the last; I am he, &c.—Isa. xli. 4. xliv. 6.

When thou passest through the waters, &c. they shall not overflow thee, &c. For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour, &c. And besides me there is no Saviour, &c. I will work, and who shall let it? &c.-Isa. xliii. 2, 3. 11-16. xlv. 21.

Thus saith the Lord thy Redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the Lord that maketh all things, that stretcheth forth the heavens, &c. that confirmeth the word of his servant and performeth the counsel of his messengers, &c. that saith to the deep, Be dry. - Isa. xliv, 24-27.

I am the Lord, and there is none else: I form the light, and create darkness, &c. Thou art a God, O God of Israel, the Saviour.-Isa. xlv. 6, 7. 15.21.

My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.-Isa. xlvi. 10.

Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? Behold, at my rebuke, I dry up the sea, &c. Who is among you that feareth the Lord, &c. that walketh in darkness and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the Lord, and stay upon his God.-Isa. 1. 2, 3. 10. viii. 17. lix. 1. Ps. cxv. 11.

Fear not, &c. for thy Maker is thine husband, the Lord of hosts is his name and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel, the God of the whole earth.-Isa. liv. 4, 5.

But he that putteth his trust in me,

shall possess the land, and shall inherit my holy mountain.-Isa. lvii. 13. Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save: neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear? but your iniquities have separated. Isa. lix. 1, 2. 1. 2.

Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is: for he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, &c. O Lord, the hope of Israel.-Jer. xvii. 7, 8. 13.

Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh is there any thing too hard for me?-Jer. xxxii. 27.

I will surely deliver thee, &c. because thou hast put thy trust in me, saith the Lord.-Jer. xxxix. 18.

Leave thy fatherless, &c. and let thy widows trust in me.-Jer. xlix. 11.

Their Redeemer is strong, the Lord of hosts is his name, he shall thoroughly plead their cause. Jer. 1. 34.

I the Lord have spoken it, and will do it.-Ezek. xxii. 14.

Blessed be God, &c. for wisdom and might are his he changeth the times, &c. removeth kings, &c. Dan. ii. 20-22. 47. iv. 17. 32.

Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us, &c. and he will deliver us. Dan. iii. 17. 28.

Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no manner of hurt was found upon him, because he believed in his God.-Dan. vi. 23.

Thou shalt know no God but me, for there is no Saviour besides me. O Israel thou hast destroyed thyself, but in me is thine help.-Hosea xiii. 4, 9.

Asshur shall not save us, &c. for in thee the fatherless findeth mercy. Hosea xiv. 3.

(or strength) in the day of trouble, and he knoweth them that trust in him.-Nahum i. 7.

Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines: the labour of the olive shall fail, and the field shall yield no meat, &c. yet I will rejoice in the Lord; I will joy in the God of my salvation. The Lord God is my strength.-Hab. iii. 17-19.

Woe to her, &c. she trusteth not in the Lord; she drew not near to her God. I will leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they shall trust in the name of the Lord.-Zeph. iii. 1, 2. 12.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts: Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel.-Zech. iv. 6, 7.

Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink ; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on, &c. Behold the fowls of the air, &c. yet your heavenly Father feedeth them: are ye not much better than they? &c. Consider the lilies, &c.

If God so clothe the grass, &c. shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith, &c. your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.-Matt. vi. 25, 26. 28-30. 32.

There is one God, and there is none other but he.-Mark xii. 32.

Blessed is she that believes, for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her, &c.— Luke i. 45.

Let not your hearts be troubled; ye believe in God, believe also in me.John xiv. 1.

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.Acts xv. 18.

God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, &c. he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things.Acts xvii. 24, 25.

When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord.-Jonah ii. 7. Trust ye not in a friend, &c. for the son dishonoureth the father, &c. Therefore I will look unto the Lord, I will wait for the God of my salvation. Micah vii. 5—7. Let God be true, but every man a The Lord is good, a strong hold liar.-Rom. iii. 4.

If God be for us, who can be against us?-Rom. viii. 31.

The foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 1 Cor. i. 25. 27.

God, &c. the Father of mercies, and the God of all comforts, &c. We had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver; in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us.— 2 Cor. i. 3. 9, 10. 1 Sam. xvii. 34, &c.

God, that comforteth those that are cast down, &c.-2 Cor. vii. 6.

Unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we can ask or think, &c.-Eph. iii. 20. Luke i. 37.

Be careful for nothing, but in every thing by prayer, &c. let your requests be made known unto God.-Phil. iv. 6. The living and true God.--1 Thess. i. 9. 1 Pet. i. 23.

Therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, especially of those that believe. -1 Tim. iv. 10.

Charge them that are rich, &c. that they trust not, &c. but in the living God, who, &c.-1 Tim. vi. 17. In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began.-Tit. i. 2.

Be content with such things as ye have for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee; so that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear.-Heb. xiii. 5, 6.

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, &c.-James i. 17. Casting all your care upon him, for he careth for you.-1 Pet. v. 7.

SECT. X. To look with Faith, and Hope, and Perseverance unto God in all cases: the Arguments for such behaviour.

ABRAM's servant looked if God had made his journey prosperous or not. Gen. xxiv. 21.

Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord which he will shew, &c. and the Lord shall fight for you, &c.—Exod. xiv. 13, 14. Gen. xlix. 18.

The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth.— Exod. xxxiv. 6.

When the people complained (or were as it were complainers) it displeased the Lord, &c.-Numb. xi. 1.

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?Numb. xxiii. 19. Heb. vi. 18. Titus i. 2. Rom. iii. 4. 1 Sam. xv. 29. The Lord thy God, he is God: the faithful God, which keepeth covenant. -Deut. vii. 9.

Not one thing hath failed of all the good things which the Lord your God spake, &c.-Josh. xxiii. 14. xxi. 45. 1 Kings viii. 56.

The king of Israel said, Behold this evil is of the Lord; what should I wait for the Lord any longer?--2 Kings vi. 33.

We have no might, &c. neither know we what to do; but our eyes are upon thee. Ye shall not need to fight in this battle; set yourselves, stand ye, and see the salvation of the Lord with you.-2 Chron. xx. 12.17.

I would seek unto God, and unto God would I commit my cause: which doth great things and unsearchable, marvellous things without number.-Job v. 8, 9.

In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.Ps. v. 3.

Thou, Lord, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.-Ps. ix. 10.

They shall praise the Lord that seek him.-Ps. xxii. 26.

Thou the God of my salvation: on thee do I wait all the day, &c. mine eyes are ever towards the Lord: for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. -Ps. xxv. 5. 15. 21.

Wait on the Lord, and be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.Ps. xxvii. 14.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them, &c. who hope in his mercy, to deliver their soul, &c. Our soul waiteth for the Lord, he is our help.Ps. xxxiii. 18-20.

Thy mercy, O Lord, is in the heavens thy faithfulness reacheth unto the clouds.-Ps. xxxvi. 5. lvii. 10. Commit thy way unto the Lord, &c. and he shall bring it to pass, &c. rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him; fret not thyself, &c. because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass, &c. Fret not thyself in any wise to do evil, &c. Wait on the Lord, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee.-Ps. xxxvii. 5. 7, 8. 34.

And now, Lord, what wait I for? my hope is in thee.-Ps. xxxix. 7.

I waited patiently for the Lord, and he inclined unto me and heard my cry; he brought me up out of an horrible pit, out of the mire.-Ps. xl. 1, 2.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? why art thou disquieted in me? hope thon in God, for I shall yet praise him.-Ps. xlii. 11. xliii. 5.

God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in time of trouble.Ps. xlvi. 1.

My soul, wait thou only upon God: for my expectation is only from him: he only is my rock, and, &c.-Ps. lxii. 5, 6.

Thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious: longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth.-Ps. lxxxvi. 15. cxi. 4.

Even from everlasting to everlasting thou art God: thou turnest man to destruction, and sayest, Return ye children of men.-Ps. xc. 2, 3.

The Lord will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.-Ps. xciv. 14. Deut. xxxi. 6, 8.

The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy : he will not always chide, neither will he keep anger for ever. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him, &c. The mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting.-Ps. ciii. 8, 9. 13. 17. lxxviii. 38, 39.

These all wait on thee, that thou mayest give them their meat in due season.-Ps. civ. 27.

They soon forgat his works; they waited not for his counsel.-Ps. cvi. 13.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion: he hath given meat unto them that fear him, he will ever be mindful of his covenant.-Ps. cxi. 4, 5. cxvi. 5. cxii. 4.

My soul fainteth for thy salvation: I hope in thy word.-Ps. cxix. 81.

Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, &c. so our eyes wait upon the Lord our God, until he have mercy upon us.-Ps. cxxiii. 2.

I wait for the Lord; my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord, more than they that watch for the morning: let Israel hope in the Lord, for with the Lord is mercy and plenteous redemption.-Ps. cxxx. 5—7.

Our bones are scattered, &c. but mine eyes are unto thee, O God the Lord.-Ps. cxli. 7, 8.

The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger, and of great mercy: the Lord is good to all,
