L'archange Michel, couvert d'une cuirasse, tient d'une main un bouclier où est tracée une croix peinte en rouge, et de l'autre une épée avec laquelle il va frapper des démons représentés sous des figures monstrueuses. Ce tableau de la jeunesse de Raphaël présente beaucoup d'intérêt, puisqu'on y voit en quelque sorte le point de départ de cet artiste; mais il est loin de ces chefs-d'œuvre sublimes où l'on ne trouve que des sujets d'admiration. Il est difficile d'expliquer l'idée de Raphaël, qui a placé dans le fond du tableau, à droite, quatre figures nues enlacées par des serpens, et à gauche une procession de personnages revêtus d'une grande capuche en étoffe d'or, et se dirigeant vers un édifice enflammé. Ce tableau a été peint sur le revers d'un damier; il sert de pendant au saint Georges décrit sous le n° 55. Haut., II pouces; larg., 9 pouces 6 lignes. The archangel Michael, covered with a cuirass, holds in one hand a shield, on which a red cross is painted, and in the other a sword with which he is about to strike demons represented under the most hideous forms. This early picture of Raphael is very interesting as it displays in some degree the point from which he first started; it is, however, far inferior to those sublime chefs-d'œuvre where only subjects of admiration abound. It is difficult to explain Raphael's motive for placing at the background of the picture, to the right, four naked figures entwined by serpents, and at the left a procession of personages cloathed in capuchins of gold stuff, and advancing towards a burning edifice. This picture, painted on the reverse of a chefs-board, tallies with that of St George described under no 55. Height, I foot; breadth, 10 inches. |
