En peu d'instans le carnage devint d'autant plus terrible que le fanatisme des révoltés les empêchait de voir qu'ils ne pouvaient résister à l'indignation des Français, qui venaient de voir périr un de leurs généraux. Girodet n'avait encore traité que des sujets simples et pathétiques, qui ne comportaient dans leur composition qu'un petit nombre de personnages; dans celui-ci, au contraire, il avait à représenter une scène tumultucuse dont l'action, loin d'être unique, n'est qu'un composé de plusieurs épisodes. Le groupe le plus remarquable est celui dans lequel un homme entièrement nu soutient un jeune Turc richement vêtu, qui vient de recevoir le coup de la mort. Près de lui est un nègre également nu, et qui, tout en cherchant à éviter le coup qui doit le frapper à mort, tient encore la tête d'un jeune Français. Near to him is a negro, equally naked, and who, in seeking to ward off the fatal stroke, still holds the head of a young Frenchman.
