sèrent que son corps, d'une beauté parfaite, participait des deux individus dont il avait reçu l'existence. Ils prétendirent aussi que Salmacis, éprise de tant de beautés, avait obtenu la faveur de se confondre avec celui qu'elle aimait, et de là sont venues toutes les fables de l'union des deux sexes sur un seul individu.

En adoptant l'idée donnée par les poëtes, les artistes ont voulu réunir dans un même corps des formes et des beautés qui ne peuvent se rencontrer ensemble. Il était difficile de représenter un être semblable dans une action quelconque; aussi le sculpteur s'est-il déterminé à le montrer dans le repos que procure un sommeil qui cependant pourrait bien être agité par un songe amoureux.

Cette statue est un des meilleurs ouvrages de l'antiquité; on peut y admirer l'élégance des formes et leur pureté; la tête est à la fois naïve et voluptueuse, la chevelure est remarquable par le goût et l'artifice avec lesquels elle est arrangée.

Pline cite avec honneur une statue d'Hermaphrodite en bronze, qui était d'un sculpteur athénien nommé Polydes; il est probable que cet ancien bronze est l'original des marbres que l'on voit maintenant au Musée français, dans la galerie de Florence, et dans le palais Borghèse à Rome.

HERMAPHRODITE.

The son of Mercury and Venus; his appellation is that of the united names of his two parents, who are styled in greek Hermes and Aphrodite. The poets suppose that his body, of the most perfect beauty, participated the natures of the two beings to whom he owed existence. They likewise pretend that Salmacis, enamoured of so much beauty, obtained the favour of blending herself with him she loved, and hence are derived all the fables of the union of the two sexes in one individual.

In adopting the idea of the poets, the artist sought to unite in the same body forms and beauties which are incompatible. It was difficult to represent such a being in any state of action; the sculptor, therefore, decided to exhibit it in the repose produced by sleep, which however might be agitated by an amorous dream.

This statue is one of the best works of antiquity; the elegance and purity of its forms are worthy of admiration; head is at the same time simple and voluptuous, the hair is remarkable for the taste and art with which it is arranged.

Pliny makes honourable mention of an Hermaphrodite statue in bronze, by an athenian sculptor named Polydes; it is probable this ancient bronze is the original of those in marble seen at the French Museum, in the Florence gallery, and the Borghese palace at Rome.
