SAINT GRÉGOIRE-LE-GRAND.

D'une illustre famille romaine, saint Grégoire fut d'abord préteur de Rome. Le mépris des grandeurs et des richesses l'engagea à se retirer dans un monastère qu'il avait fait bâtir sous l'invocation de saint André. Le pape Pélage II le tira de cette retraite pour le faire un des sept diacres de Rome, puis l'envoya en qualité de nonce à Constantinople. Devenu secrétaire du pape, à la mort de ce pontife, en 590, il fut élu pour

son successeur.

Le nouveau pape mit tout son zèle à arrêter les progrès de la peste qui venait de se manifester, et à éteindre le schisme qui existait alors. Il assembla plusieurs conciles pour maintenir la discipline ecclésiastique et réprimer l'incontinence du clergé. Il réforma l'office divin, et c'est un service rendu à l'église; mais on croit qu'il fit brûler plusieurs ouvrages des anciens cela tient plutôt à la barbarie du siècle dans lequel il vivait qu'à son caractère personnel, car en cherchant à convertir les hérétiques, il voulait qu'on employât à leur égard la persuasion et non la violence. Il s'opposa aux vexations qu'on exerçait contre les Juifs pour les attirer au christianisme. C'est lui aussi qui le premier prit le titre de serviteur des serviteurs de Dieu.

Ce tableau, l'un des plus beaux d'Annibal Carrache, représente le pape en prière accompagné de deux anges; il décorait autrefois l'autel de l'église de Saint-Grégoire à Rome. Apporté en Angleterre au commencement de ce siècle, il fut vendu à lord Rodstock, et a passé depuis dans la galerie du marquis de Stafford.

SAINT GREGORY THE GREAT.

Of an illustrious roman family, saint Gregory was at first prætor at Rome. Contemning riches and grandeur, he retired into a monastery he had caused to be built at the invocation of saint Andrew. Pope Pelage II drew him from his retreat to make him one of the seven deacons of Rome, next sent him in quality of nuncio to Constantinople, and afterwards named him his secretary. At the death of his patron the pope, in 590, he was elected his successor.

The new pope exerted all his zeal to arrest the progress of the plague, which had just began to manifest itself, and to extinguish the schism which then existed. He assembled several councils to maintain ecclesiastical discipline, and repress incontinence of the clergy. He reformed the service of the church, but it is believed he had several works burnt of the ancients, which however, was more owing to the gothic ignorance of that age than to his own personal character; as in seeking to convert heretics, he wished persuasion and not violence to be employed. He put a stop to the vexations exercised against the Jews for bringing them over to christiany. He was the first also who took the title of servant of the servants of God.

This picture, one of the best of Annibal Carrachio, represents the pope praying in the company of two angels; it formerly decorated the church of Saint-Gregory at Rome, was brought to England at the beginning of the present century, and sold to lord Rodstock; it has been since transferred to the marquis of Stafford's gallery.
