SAINT ANTOINE

TOURMENTÉ PAR LE DÉMON.

Souvent on parle des tentations de saint Antoine, et on sait que ce pieux cénobite, dès l'âge de dix-huit ans, quitta le monde pour embrasser la vie solitaire; on raconte aussi qu'il eut des visions dans lesquelles le démon le tourmentait en lui faisant voir les images agréables de la vie du siècle, ainsi que les plaisirs qu'il pouvait y trouver. L'esprit malin s'obstinait à lui représenter sous les couleurs les plus sombres les privations auxquelles il voulait s'astreindre par pénitence, et à lui faire envisager comme une chose affreuse l'abandon dans lequel il laissait une jeune sœur qui n'avait d'autre appui que lui. Nous ajouterons ici quelques circonstances moins connues; c'est que les austérités auxquelles il se livra, et la retraite absolue à laquelle il se condamna en s'enfermant dans un tombeau dont il n'ouvrait la porte que pour recevoir quelques alimens qu'on lui apportait, troublèrent ses esprits de nouvelles visions, pendant lesquelles le démon lui apparut sous les formes les plus hideuses, en imitant le cri des animaux les plus ennemis de l'homme. Par suite de ces mêmes visions, saint Antoine fut trouvé sans mouvement et emmené dans une église. Revenu à lui, il se fit reporter au milieu des rochers, et le démon revenant encore l'effrayer, il ne put l'éloigner qu'en lui montrant la croix dans laquelle il mettait tout son salut.

Un sujet aussi bizarre convenait bien à l'imagination exaltéc de Salvator Rosa; et s'il ne l'a pas rendu agréable, il l'a du moins rendu intéressant.

SAINT ANTHONY

TORMENTED BY THE DEMON.

Although the temptations of saint Antony are often spoken of; although it is known that this pious monk at 18 years of age forsook the world to embrace a solitary life; although it is related that he had visions in which the demon haunted him with agreeables images of the times he lived in, and the wordly pleasure he could enjoy, notwithstanding it is asserted the wicked spirit represented to him in the most gloomy colours the privations penitence must entail upon him; and finally depicted, as a most dreadful thing, the desolate condition in which he had left a young sister who had no support but him; yet it may not be so well known, that the austerities he gave himself up to, and the absolute retirement to which he condemned himself in a tomb, the door of which he only opened to receive the humble food brought to him, occasioned this pious man new visions, during which the demon appeared to him under the most hideous forms, imitating the cries of animals the most hostile to mankind. In consequence of these visions, saint Anthony was found senseless and conveyed into a church, where on recovering he had himself taken back to his abode amongst the rocks, upon which the demon returned to terrify him again, whom he drove away on shewing him the on which he solely relied for security.

So singular a subject accorded well with the wild imagination of Salvator Rosa; and if he has not rendered it agreeable, he has at least made it interesting.
