Jean Bernardon, né à Assise en 1182, si connu sous le nom de François d'Assise, resta dans le commerce jusqu'à l'âge de vingt-cinq ans. Sentant alors un grand mépris pour les biens de ce monde, il quitta sa famille, donna aux indigens tout ce qu'il possédait, et fit vœu de pauvreté. C'est à cela surtout qu'il astreignit l'ordre des Cordeliers, qu'il institua en 1209 sous le nom de Frères mineurs, pour désigner l'humilité dont il faisait profession, et les distinguer des Dominicains, qui, s'adonnant à la prédication, semblaient devoir être au dessus d'eux. Il établit ensuite des religieuses de sainte Claire ou pauvres dames; et enfin des hommes mariés ayant voulu suivre sa règle, il institua pour eux le tiers ordre de saint François, dit frères de la pénitence. Les mortifications et les jeûnes auxquels s'astreignait continuellement saint François le réduisirent à un état continuel de maladie; il vécut abreuvé de douleurs, et encore plus rempli de patience; enfin, sentant sa mort approcher, il se fit conduire dans sa ville natale, où ayant réuni les frères de son ordre, il les exhorta de nouveau, et mourut les bras croisés sur la poitrine, le 4 octobre 1226. Deux ans après il fut canonisé par le pape Grégoire IX. Le tableau de la mort de saint François a appartenu à Colbert, et il fut alors gravé par Gérard Audran. ITALIAN SCHOOL. oooooo A. John Bernardon, born at Assise in 1182, so well known by the name of François d'Assise, followed the pursuits of commerce to the age of 15 years. Feeling at that period the utmost contempt for the goods of this world, he left his family, bestowed all he had on the poor, and made a vow of poverty. To this vow he especially bound the order of Cordeliers, instituted by him in 1209 under the name of Minor Brothers, to designate the humility he professed, and to distinguish them from the Dominicans, who, devoting themselves to preaching, seemed their superiors. He next established the nuns of saint Claire, or poor ladies; and finally, married men desiring to submit to his regulations, he instituted for them the third order of saint Francis or brothers of penitence. The continual fasts and mortifications of saint Francis reduced him to a state of unceasing illness; he lived full of pain and still more full of patience; at last, finding the hour of death at hand he caused himself to be conveyed to his native place, when having assembled all the brothers of his order, he exhorted them anew, and died, with his arms crossed on his breast, the 4th of october 1226. He was canonized two years after by pope Gregory IX. This picture belonged to Colbert, and at that time was engraved by Gérard Audran. |
