Nous avons déjà eu occasion de faire remarquer que c'est à une dévotion particulière de Raphaël à la Vierge qu'on doit cette variété étonnante de compositions représentant l'enfant Jésus avec sa mère et d'autres personnes qui constituent la Sainte Famille: les tableaux de cette nature sont au nombre de plus de soixante, et plusieurs, ainsi qu'on l'a déjà vu, ont reçu des dénominatious plus ou moins singulières, mais qui sont tellement admises dans le langage des arts, qu'on ne fait nulle difficulté de les employer lorsqu'on veut les désigner. Quoique ces dénominations n'aient pas toutes un caractère de noblesse digne du sujet, nous avons cru qu'il serait bon de les faire connaître. Celle-ci porte le nom de Vierge aux candelabres, à cause de ceux qui sont placés dans le fond, de chaque côté de la Vierge; d'autres sont connues sous le nom de Vierge à la chaise, Vierge au berceau, Vierge à l'écuelle, Vierge au rideau, Vierge au baldaquin, Vierge au linge, dite aussi le Silence, Vierge au voile, Vierge aux ruines, Vierge à l'œillet, Vierge au palmier, Vierge au chardonneret, Vierge au poisson, Vierge de Lorette, Vierge de Foligno, dite aussi Vierge au donataire, Vierge de saint Sixte, Vierge du duc d'Albe, Vierge à la longue cuisse, et enfin la Belle Jardinière. THE VIRGIN AND THE INFANT JESUS. We have before remarked that to a religions feeling in Raphael for the Virgin we are indebted for the astonishing variety of compositions, representing the infant Jesus and his mother with other persons, constituting together the Holy Family: the pictures of this nature are more than sixty in nnmber, and many, as we have already seen, have received names more or less singular, but so generally used in the language of the fine arts, that they are unhesitatingly employed when requisite. Although these denominations are not always of a character worthy of the subject, we have conceived it proper to mention them. The present picture is intitled the Virgin with the chandeliers, on account of those which are placed in the bach-ground on each side of the Virgin; others are known by the following names, the Virgin in a chair, the Virgin with a cradle, the Virgin with a curtain, the Virgin with a canopy, the Virgin cloathed in linen, called also le Silence, the Virgin with a veil, the Virgin and ruins, the Virgin with a pink, the Virgin with a palm-branch, the Virgin with a goldfinch, the Virgin with fish, the Virgin of Loretto, the Virgin of Foligno, called also the Virgin donor, the Virgin of saint Sixtus, the Virgin of the duke of Alba, the Virgin with the long thigh, and finally the Handsome Garden-girl.
