PREFATORY NOTE

I HAVE read with care the Introduction and the Notes on the Critical Study of these selections from the "Sketch-Book," and think they will be found correct and serviceable. For the remarks on the number and source of figures I am alone responsible; otherwise, I have merely suggested some additions and rearrangements to the editors. In selecting the subjects of sentence structure and figures of speech for especial study, they draw attention to two of the elements of style most worth considering in such a writer as Irving. The study of the paragraph may be carried on in connection with composition work, and to the remarks on this subject (pp. 17 and 18) I would call especial attention. The study of the vocabulary will be promoted by the Notes. As to these last, there may be difference of opinion as to the expediency of laying so much stress in some of the sketches upon derivations from foreign languages. The derivations are given here for the benefit of those teachers who desire to use them. Others can omit them. I have revised the etymologies and believe them to be accurate. The choice of selections has been made by the publishers with the idea of including those pieces which were most like stories, leaving the essays for another volume. The publishers alone are responsible for the text.
