1. What is meant by Philosophical Necessity? What is Mr. Mill's reason for discussing it in his Sixth Book?

2. Mr. Mill adduces certain considerations to shew that speculations concerning society may be as reliable as conclusions of the exact sciences. What are those considerations?

3. Is Induction by itself or Deduction by itself competent to resolve problems of society? If not, explain fully how such problems can be resolved.

4. Mention the principal sources of erroneous observation in political investigations, distinguishing those which are common to the sciences generally from those which are special to society and politics.

5. What is the supreme canon of historical evidence? Is that canon exclusive as well as inclusive?

1. In what principal features did the industrial organization of the Early Roman Empire stand in broad contrast with that of the British Empire of the present century?

2. Trace the development of national industry during the Elizabethan period.

3. What was the population of the British Islands at the beginning of the present century? What was it at the last census ? What are the principal causes which have operated during the interval to increase or to retard population in any part of the British Islands?

4. Mention any evidence of change in the proportion of imports to exports in the case of the British Islands during the last forty years. To what conclusion, if any, does the evidence point?

5. What, in British India, are the great impediments to better husbandry, and how, if at all, may those impediments be modified or removed?

6. Give the history of the Smith, and explain why Smith is so common a surname in all European

countries.

7. Give some account of Richard Crawshay, Benjamin Huntsman, William Murdock, David Mushet, and Phineas Pett respectively.

8. Is Rent an element in the cost of production? State your reasons fully.

9. What conditions must be satisfied in order that a trade combination to increase the price of an article in a given market by limiting the supply may succeed?

(2) ENGLISH.

1. What are the chief differences between Anglo-Saxon (or old English) and modern English?

2. Write an essay on the connection between English and existing European languages.

3. What is meant by a synonym ? Give several examples. Account for English being specially rich in synonyms.

4. State the arguments for and against phonetic spelling.

5. Write a short historical account of the use of its and thou. Can one justify the use of the common expression "it's me"?"

6. Is there any defence for slang? Are distinctions to be made between different kinds of slang?
