A.—1. Translate into English

Διὰ τοῦτο ̓Απόλλων μὲν λοιμὸν ἔπεμψε. Ποσειδῶν δὲ κῆτος, ὅ τοὺς ἐν τῷ πεδίῳ συνήρπαζεν ἀνθρώπους. Χρησμῶν δὲ λεγόντων, ἀπαλλαγὴν ἔσεσθαι τῶν συμφορῶν, ἐὰν προθῇ Λαομέδων Ἡσιόνην, τὴν θυγατέρα αὐτοῦ, βορὰν τῷ κήτει, οὗτος προὔθηκε, ταῖς πλησίον τῆς θαλάσσης πέτραις προσαρτήσας αὐτήν. Ταύτην ἰδὼν ἐκκειμένην Ἡρακλῆς, ὑπέσχετο σώσειν αὐτὴν, εἰ τὰς ἵππους παρὰ Λαομέδοντος λήψεται, ἃς ὁ Ζεὺς ποινὴν τῆς Γανυμήδους ἁρπαγῆς ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ· δώσειν δὲ Λαομέδοντος εἰπόντος, κτείνας τὸ κῆτος Ησιόνην ἔσωσε. Μὴ βουλομένου δὲ τὸν μισθὸν ἀποδοῦναι, Ἡρακλῆς αὐτὸν ἀπέκτεινε, καὶ τὴν πόλιν εἷλεν.

2. Translate into Greek

(a) The possession of wisdom is to men more excellent than strength, to women than beauty. (6) In this region many sheep and cattle perish every year for want of water.

(c) If he had never left his native land, he would be a rich and prosperous man at this day.

(d) He proved that he was a friend to the State by showing kindness to its citizens, whenever he met them.

3. Decline throughout, giving genders of nouns and comparison of adjectives

4. Name the mood and tense of each of the following:ἑλόμενοι, ἀποδράναι, ὤμοσαν, κατέστησε, ἐνικῶμεν, λελείψεται, ἐπιθήσεσθαι, πεπόνθασι, βεβηκότες, and give the principal parts of the verbs from which they are respectively formed.

B.-1. Translate into English

Αὐταὶ δὲ αἱ βάλανοι τῶν φοινίκων, οἵας μὲν ἐν τοῖς Ἕλλησιν ἔστιν ἰδεῖν, τοῖς οἰκέταις ἀπέκειντο αἱ δὲ τοῖς δεσπόταις ἀποκείμεναι ἦσαν ἀπόλεκτοι, θαυμάσιαι τὸ κάλλος καὶ τὸ μέγεθος· ἡ δὲ ὄψις ἠλέκτρου οὐδὲν διέφερεν τὰς δέ τινας καὶ ξηραίνοντες τραγήματα ἀπετίθεσαν. Καὶ ἦν καὶ παρὰ πότον ἡδὺ μέν, κεφαλαλγὲς δέ. Ἐνταῦθα καὶ τὸν ἐγκέφαλον τοῦ φοίνικος πρῶτον ἔφαγον οἱ στρατιῶται, καὶ οἱ πολλοὶ ἐθαύμασαν τό τε εἶδος καὶ τὴν ἰδιότητα τῆς ἡδονῆς. Ην δὲ σφόδρα καὶ τοῦτο κεφαλαλγές. Ο δὲ φοίνιξ ὅθεν ἐξαιρεθείη ὁ ἐγκέφαλος ὅλος ἐξηναίνετο.

2. Translate into English

(α) εἰ δὲ δὴ καὶ μανέντες σε κατακτείναιμεν, ἄλλο τι ἂν ἢ τὸν εὐεργέτην κατακτείναντες πρὸς βασιλέα τὸν μέγιστον ἔφεδρον ἀγωνιζοίμεθα ;

(6) τὴν μὲν γὰρ ἐπὶ τῇ κεφαλῇ τιάραν βασιλεῖ μόνῳ ἔξεστιν ὀρθὴν ἔχειν, τὴνδ ̓ ἐπὶ τῇ καρδίᾳ ἴσως ἂν ὑμῶν παρόντων καὶ ἕτερος εὐπετῶς ἔχοι.

(c) καὶ γὰρ τὸ στυγνὸν τότε φαιδρὸν αὐτοῦ ἐν τοῖς ἄλλοις προσώποις ἔφασαν φαίνεσθαι.

(α) δεξιὰς ἐνίοις παρὰ βασιλέως φέροντες, μὴ μνησικακήσειν βασιλέα αὐτοῖς τῆς σὺν Κύρῳ ἐπιστρατείας, μηδὲ ἄλλου μηδενὸς τῶν παρωχημένων.

3. Parse-αὐταί, μέγεθος, ἐξηναίνετο, μέγιστον, παρόντων, προσώποις, ἐπιστρατείας, μηδενός.

4. Translate, adding notes upon any special constructions

(α) ᾐσχύνθημεν καὶ θεοὺς καὶ ἀνθρώπους.

(6) ἔτυχον ἐν περιπάτῳ ὄντες πρὸ τῶν ὅπλων.

(c) θυομένῳ ἰέναι ἐπὶ βασιλέα οὐκ ἐγίνετο τὰ ἱερά.
(α) οὗτοι μὲν, ὦ Κλέαρχε, ἄλλος ἄλλα λέγει.
(ε) τοῦτο δ' ἐποίει, ἐκ τοῦ χαλεπὸς εἶναι.

5. Give the English for ἀποστροφη εἰς δύο εύρημα ἐποιησάμην—ὑπὸ τῶν ἐν τῇ Σπάρτῃ τελῶν—ἔξεστιν ἡμῖν ταμιεύεσθαι καλοί τε καγαθοί, and the Greek for he has got his deserts- -so clever at speaking-having had their heads cut off-to be of good courage-within earshot.

A.-1. Translate into Latin prose

Meanwhile King Harold marshalled his army on the hill to defend their strong post against the attack of the Normans. All were on foot; those who had horses made use of them only to carry them to the field, and got down when the time came for actual fighting. The army was made up of soldiers of two very different kinds. The first consisting of the king's servants, his nobles, and the picked troops generally, among them the men of London, who claimed to be the king's special guards, and the men of Kent, who claimed to strike the first blow in the battle. Besides these choice troops, there were also the general levies of the neighbouring lands.

2. Translate

Recte etiam praecipi potest in amicitiis ne intemperata quaedam benevolentia, quod persaepe fit, impediat magnas utilitates amicorum. B.-1. Translate

Huic magnis praemiis pollicitationibusque persuadet, uti ad hostes transeat, et, quid fieri velit, edocet.
