CLASSICAL SCHOOL-BOOKS

BY THE REV. H. M. WILKINS, M.A.

A PROGRESSIVE GREEK DELECTUS,
For the use of Schools. Fifth Edition, 12mo. 4s.

KEY, being a Literal English Translation, for the use of Teachers.
Second Edition. 12mo. price 2s. 6d.

THE plan of this work, suggested by the Rev. Dr. Temple, Head Master of Rugby School, and since approved by many of the first scholastic authorities, is to illustrate every stage of Bishop Wordsworth's Greek Accidence, on the principle that a Delectus should be a grammar teaching by example. Accordingly, in lieu of the exegetical notes, too commonly construing and parsing for the pupil in similar works, constant reference is

made to Wordsworth's Accidence and Syntax, the scope and practical bearing of which are thus inculcated on the pupil's mind as he proceeds. Idiomatic constructions only are explained in the Notes; ordinary words and phrases being given in a lexicon appended, in which it has been aimed to present all the additional information which the youthful student of Greek can require, so as to make this Delectus complete in itself.

PROGRESSIVE GREEK ANTHOLOGY,

On the same plan, and to follow in use the above. Second Edition, thoroughly revised.

THE volume is designed chiefly for the forms immediately above the fourth in our public schools, and the corresponding classes in other institutions, to whose presumed capacities the Notes have been carefully adjusted. The want of such a Greek Anthology or Reading Book, adapted to succeed a Delectus, had long been felt; the Eton Poetæ Græci Selecti, and the Harrow Musa Græca, which are almost the only representatives of the class in use in English schools, being adapted solely to the higher forms. The present

collection has been confined to poetry by the advice of some of the Masters of Harrow School; of Dr. Kennedy, the Head Master of Shrewsbury; and that of many other scholastic authorities. It is felt that, on the one hand, available editions exist of the easier prose authors read by schoolboys; while, on the other hand, the influence of the middle-class examinations tends to substitute the study of continuous portions of those authors for the use of books containing extracts from them.

LATIN PROSE EXERCISES.

Intended chiefly for the Middle Classes of Schools. Second Edition. 12mo. price 4s. 6d.

KEY, for Schoolmasters and Tutors only, price 5s.

"THESE Latin Prose Exercises are distinguished, like the Author's former books, for clearness of arrangement, and for a just appreciation of the right amount of help to be given to learners.' GUARDIAN.

THIS is a scholar-like and accurate little work....... Mr. Wilkins's chapter on the Construction of Sentences, seems to us to be particularly well done; but the whole work is deserving of high commendation for the eminently clear and practical arrangement of its rules and exercises.'

EDUCATIONAL TIMES.

'MR. WILKINS's volume of Latin Prose Exercises is intended for such students as are fit to work through ARNOLD'S Introduction to Latin Prose, from which it differs in containing a more complete and systematic exposition of the syntax of the language. The rules, derived from the best

modern grammars, are stated with distinctness and accuracy. The exercises are mostly passages from Cicero, Cæsar, Livy, and Cornelius Nepos.' ATHENEUM.

THIS is a volume of Latin exercises unconnected with any special grammar and untrammelled by needless technicalities, but containing a systematic exposition of syntax, the rules of which are based on Madvig, Key, and Donaldson, with recourse in some respects to Dr. Kennedy's Elementary Grammar as a framework. .... Mr. Wilkins, whilst laying down a system of syntax somewhat novel in parts, especially to those habituated to the earlier grammars, is enabled, by means of his copious exercises, to impress each step upon the memory far more indelibly than if he had depended on the two or three examples which commonly illustrate a rule of grammar.'
